Here is a list of exchanges that eircom has NOT enabled to date . Maybe one or two false positives , do feel free to tell me .

Around 830 are now done out of around 1180 Nationwide leaving 350 exchanges without DSL right now .

Typically these exchanges have c.350 working lines or less . Those between 350 and 450 lines will likely be enabled but not always .

Some are scheduled to be done but most are not . Those who should lobby eircom would be those connected to exchanges with between 250 and 450 lines , if it is smaller it is probably pointless right now.

Some anomalies are rather obvious when you look at this map of Clare exchanges on broadbandatoz .

While most of the red exchanges are sub 200 lines the likes of Rahey Cross ( misspelt Rehy) and Ballyvaughan and Inagh are nearer to or over 400 lines and would have been done were they in the Pale .

I'd imagine MULLINAHONE Tipperary will be enabled soon since that recent news story about it and lack of ADSL and the fact its not part of the NBS.

Been there, done that. Both parishes, I believe. You can see the results. Inagh would have been closer to 1,000 lines were it done properly (and as originally planned) when put in back in the 90s. The parish is served by Inagh, Ennis and Ennistymon right now. There are some parts of Kilnamona (same parish, closer to Ennis) that are much closer to Inagh exchange, but served by Ennis (and of course still can't get DSL). They were all meant to have been switched over to Inagh at the time (I served the contractors and eircom employees lunch, every day at the time!). Alas, it didn't come to fruition.

Sounds about right, sadly.

Lots of eircom activity around the Coon exchange right now but no idea when/if it will come live. It was *supposed* to go on stream in Q1 2009, then September, now it's 'by the end of 2009'.

As for the Bilboa exchange in Carlow, five miles down the road, nothing is happening it seems. It's not down for upgrading, and I don't think the area is even on the NBS scheme.

Just out of curiosity, how does Eircom connect up those rural exchanges to their backhaul? Is it possible that a whole load of exchanges would be on the same 'line' and that none of them can be switched on till the backhaul is upgraded to them all?

It could be that the exchange gear and cabling is ready to do DSL but the backhaul's not in place. No idea though, and pointless trying to contact anyone in eircom customer support to ask as they're mostly not knowledgable about these things, and I'd want to talk to a proper engineer anyhow.

This sort of thing is why I'm just about ready to give up on them and try and get a group fibre project going. :mad:

Generally they will run a fibre nowadays trekkyp

Ironically smaller exchanges ( like Coon) get

1. better backhaul ...minimum 1gbit for no more than 330 lnes or 3mbits per line ...and not every line will get DSL either as we know.
2. better dsl , Coon gets Adsl 2 which will mean that someone in Coon may get 24mbits where someone in Thomastown is stuck on 8 mbits max because it was done some years back and Adsl2 will be more stable at longer lengths.

Furthermore Thomastown may only have 'old' backhaul like 155mbits stm circuits and that shared across 1500 lines . 0.1mbit each .

By that metric the average Coon person has 30x the backhaul of the average Thomastown person and even if Thomastown got a 1gbit fibre connection it would still only make 0.66mbits available per line .

The towns that are in trouble now are the ones which were done around 2005/2006

They have 1500-10000 persons and are not big enough for eircom to bother upgrading their backhaul unless people scream loudly or worth installing ADSL2 gear in there according to eircom


Bigger exchanges will get upgraded and smaller ones only ever got fibre backhaul and ADSL2 .

Seems daft that's the case but if we get good DSL in the meantime because we're waiting longer, then I for one will not complain. Feel for the poor buggers who do have difficulties, though. Bloody daft situation.
