Religion in primary schools

Someone recently told me that about 97% of primary schools in Ireland are catholic. Is this true? If so, how is it legal for state funded primary schools to have a religious orientation? When I was in primary school, not that long ago, we spent about half an hout to an hour every day on religion, - what a waste of time!…
