    not sure exactly what you mean but have a look at the substr and decode functions which work in plsql and may be of assistance

    thanks anyway dude - i was trying to decode a concatonated subquery

    instead I found syntax to include decoding at same time as conacatanating (which saved me about 30 lines of code :) )
