I hate that too it really kills the sweet smell of diesel.

I can only type with one hand and need something to do with the other hand, started to go blind, so I took up smoking.

Smoking completely disgusts me. I posted this earlier in the Phobias forum but it's relevant here too:

I have what I'd say is a phobia of smoking and anything to do with it. I'm not alone, my siblings are all the same. I feel disgusted by the word "cigarette" - I avoid saying it if at all possible and if I have to then I feel disgusted by it. I won't even touch a pack of them and will feel physically sick if one (and/or an ashtray) is even within my vicinity. I've often felt myself gagging if I inhale too much smoke.

People who smoke 20 a day are stupid.

People who smoke one or two every now and again when out are even stupider. Like, wtf is the point?

Ye, those people who drink pints when there out are stupid too.

God your a pleb :)

Easier said than done. Phobias are irrational fears, you know they are irrational but you can't control them. So I can't just "get a grip."

Is that similar to an addiction?

How? For it to be an addiction there would have to be some form of substance involved.

I quit when I met my missus 7 years ago. I don't miss coughing up gunk, smelling vile, being ostracised by non-smokers or spending a fortune on them. I was genuinely gobsmacked, realizing how revolting smokers smell, when I quit the habit.

Having said that, honestly, I freaking loved smoking. I solved more problems at work on a 5 minute fag break than I ever solved in regular work time. I loved the feeling of a lungful of smoke and I loved the social aspect of smoking.

The moment I hit 70 or contract something terminal, I'm starting smoking again. I also intend to acquire vast quantities of mind altering drugs. Can't wait....

I've given up smoking everywhere except out on the lash, can't do it, will try again, maybe the freezing winter will help me. I used to smoke 30 a day now I don't even go through a packet in a week.

Obesity is even more disgusting! The new laws where shopkeepers can't display cigarettes products behind the counter is laughable, considering all the fat people queuing up in McDonalds for their Big Macs, and young people stuffing their faces with Tayto crisps and Mars bars on a daily basis. Take a look around! Holy fúcking God at the amount of fat people in this country, and the smokers keep getting taxed in every budget. LOL. And those products displayed (Big juicy Big Macs etc.) don't even resemble the real thing. Remember the scene with Michael Douglas in 'Falling Down', LOL.

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century.

Is it time to tax fat people like we tax the smokers?

And then tax bulimics, anorexics & the undernurished. Hell, let's keep going - let's tax people with multiple personality disorders (per personality), then the sick (per illness), the needy (per need) & the ugly (per level of ugliness).

And why stop at taxes? Why not get rid of the smokers, the fat people, the ugly people & the needy and create a race of perfect people?

It may well create World War 3, but just coz Hitler lost the last battle, doesn't mean we'll fail this time around.

Bang on! You missed the whole point there, my friend. I was making a point about obesity in relation to smoking and how disgusting it is, and how people don't exercise; eat shít etc. and the cost to health system etc. Never mind..

I didn't miss your point. Smoking & obesity are in your opinion, "disgusting". I cannot argue that they don't cost the heath system money. But so does bulimia, anorexia & multiple personality disorders.

So where do you draw the line?

I was making a comparison between smoking and obesity and how much it costs our economy each year. I'm not your "friend", you're right, thanks for clarifying that. You really think a tax for fat people will actually happen? Me neither

Smoking & obesity, without doubt, causes the economy money. As does a whole heap of addictions & weaknesses that people suffer from. Addictions, by their very nature, are very rarely a choice.

But does that mean that we should turn our backs on them? You are the one who said that obesity is "disgusting". I beg to differ. I see food adddiction as an illness & I believe that we are morally obliged to help those who cannot help themselves.

Yes I believe obesity is "disgusting", when it's not genetic and totally avoidable, like in a lot of cases. I never said to turn our backs on them. I don't agree with you that food addiction is an "illness", more like greed. But that's just my opinion..

You know it's funny, some of the ex-smokers are really hitting the mark here on the pro's and con's, even as a smoker I admit the cons.

But what intrest's me is the "anti" element and how so vehement you are, if it's all that bad where were you 20, 30, 40 years ago? If it piss's off people so bad, then surely the same anger could/would have been expressed back then?

As prolific as smoking was in the past, no one was holding a gag in peoples mouths.....So why is it such a modern thing to be so full of vitrol?

Personally I think it's easy to get up on your high horse when shooting fish in a barrel is your sport of choice....the two really go together.
Regardless, I'll just go outside for a smoke rather then listen to you :p

I smoke myself and I know not everyone wants smoke billowing in their direction so I try to stand as far away as possible from other people when I'm smoking.
But FFS some people. If you don't like smoke then don't stand beside me and just start coughing in my direction. I intentionally moved out of your way so you wouldn't have smoke billowing in your face.

I know smoking is bad for you. I hate the addiction and I am cutting down but I don't need people telling me day in and day out about the danger. I know the danger. I can read the warnings on the packet. I don't need you reading out pages of pages of sh*t you've printed from the internet.

On the other hand I've met some very interesting people in smoking areas in pubs/clubs so in a way it's a very sociable habit. I know you don't need cigarettes to socialise better but in a way it helps.

I still don't understand the logic behind some pubs who cater for smokers by building beer gardens with heaters and seats etc. Most pubs I've been too you've to go outside with no shelter in the freezing cold to smoke. If a pub has a beer garden then I'll easily smoke myself stupid. That's why I prefer going to pubs without a beer garden so that the thoughts of going outside to the freezing cold will discourage me from smoking.

I think the line was already drawn with smoking. Behaviour that people voluntarily engage in that damages their health. Self-inflicted ill health. I don't see how MPD or mental illness in general falls into that category.
I'm not at all surprised that the anti-smoking bile is spilling over into obesity.
The precedent that everyone stood by and watched happen to smokers over the years has been set... enjoy the fat tax, fúckers.

Lung cancer is an even better aid to weight loss.
Thank you mother but I am already aware of the dangers of smoking. And I make my own choices in continuing to smoke.

Why do you go to a pub/club in the first place?
To sit outside in the beer garden, why else?

I've smoked tobacco with cannabis for years now and somehow haven't got hooked on the tobacco. That's probably why I don't mind the smell etc.
Having the odd cigarette one while out drinking (one a month say) is nice - you get a little head rush from the nicotine, it tastes nice mixing with beer, gives you something to do. I'd see that as more sensible than being hooked full time - you get the relaxing benefits without the finincial loss. And chances of catching the cancer from doing that would be practically negligible I'd say.

Who said anything about not being able to give up the joints? I quite often go weeks without thinking about a joint, something im sure people addicted to cigarettes would find nearly impossible. I've gone off them for months at a time, while studying for exams or similar.

Doing something often because you enjoy doing it isn't an addiction.

then you can do something i can't.
i've had to separate the two so i know that when i smoke a joint it's not because that insidious nicotine is fooling me into doing so.
