Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Amazing technique, bit lucky I suspect though :)

Terrible stuff from the keeper though

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Apart from the fact the keeper kicked it to him I don't know how it was lucky.

To manage to get a shot like that on target, from that range is nothing short of incredible. It was very lucky. It could have bounced anywhere, deflected off his foot into the stand, gone anywhere except the bloody goal. He got jammy and got a goal. But still, I love it!!!

Sure jaysus, you could say that about all great long distance goals then.

Well, all the long distance goals resulting from volleying a goal kick directly back into the net anyway. :)
Slight difference between this and beckham's halfway line goal.

Crazy goal,he generated some bloody power with such little back lift, looked like the ball was accelerating toward the goal.

A jammy goal but fantastic to look at. Never had much time for Stankovic despite Mancini loving him but he keeps growing on me.

If you did not know much about Stankovic you might think it was lucky, but a quick look around youtube you will see he has plenty of spectacular goals to his credit. It was only a matter of time before a keeper gets caught out with something like this, their kicking skilss have gradually become poorer over the last few seasons IMO.

In fairness, footballs have become even lighter and are more susceptible to bending and spinning in the air.

That's what I was thinking as well, don't know how he managed it from that distance.

surely it was a missed pass - his colleague was in front of him and he simply mi**** it - its more of an embarrassment to the goalie than a good goal.

No, he defo meant it imo, I was watching the match and you could tell right away that he was trying to score. The only lucky thing about the goal was the fact that Amelia kicked it to him, he was never going to try and pass it at 2-0 up and the players ahead of him were offside too.

Lovely techique to guide the ball in that general direction with the pace it was travelling at. He was lucky that he connected with it so well that it would be on target though. Great goal none the less.

It's not luck - he tried to do it and it came off. Just because it wouldn't go in every time he tries it doesn't make it a matter of chance... it just means he got the skill right this time.

Just like a chip, a 35-yard free kick or an overhead kick... none of them come off every time but there's no doubt that it's the player's skill that's made it happen.

If that was the case, lottery winners wouldn't be seen as "lucky" as they picked the numbers and their numbers came out of the draw.

Yes he tried to do it, there is no doubting that, there is no doubting the technique on the volley either, he was just lucky that he connected so well with it and that it fell perfectly for him.

Stankovic is pure class, very unrated player.

    He scores some crackers.

The same could be said about any goal/save if thats the way you look at it, and comparing something that takes skill to something completely random doesn't make any sense.

So you're saying if he tried that 100 times, he would score 100 times?

    Tick a boo son!!

Do you reckon a referee ever stands there and says:
Funk me, that was some goal!

    :D

Brilliant, brilliant goal. I'd say he knew instantly what he was going to try and then just guided the ball back up the pitch with the pace that was on the ball. Lovely technique.

Bad clearance, swing a leg at it, luckily enough it goes in. Story here is terrible goalkeeping not an amazing goal.

No, but if a goalie makes a great save is that lucky or is it skill, was Stankovic's goal against Milan lucky too? because he wouldn't score that, or get it on target for that matter, every time either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 639 ✭✭✭Seillejet

Having watched Stankovic down through the years I think he would be confident in his ability to guide it in. Another player considering where the keeper was would probably tried to have controlled it. The keepers a plum, hanging off the crossbar after conceding it.

Sidenote : Was Stankovic involved in a racist incident years ago?

I'm a goalie, and alot of saves can be put down to luck. Say if you have a shot absolutely blasted at you point blank and you just stick out an arm and save the ball, that would be put down to luck. Where as when you make a save that requires positioning and working your way across goal to make a save, it isn't luck, it is hard work and concentration.

Stankovic scored that goal against Milan, so what? Glen Whelan scored a similar goal against Italy, does that mean his technical footballing skill is off the wall? I can score a goal like that if you give me 100 goes at it and I'm a terrible outfield player.

I do think the Milan goal required alot less luck as he took his time to get the ball in a position to strike it thoroughly. The volley required alot of luck as it dropped to him perfectly.

I wasn't debating his ability or skill, I was just using it as an example as someone had posted a vid of it earlier.

The thing is, you can see that he positions himself to receive the ball and after that it was a matter of hitting the ball right. He intended to strike the ball and put it into the goal and thats what happened, imo that is skill not luck.

I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this because neither of us are going to change our view.

I can't understand calling that jammy or lucky, it was an incredible show of technique and quick thinking.
