Another example of someone(:)) starting a thread about cutbacks, but only demonstrating that they've no idea what they're talking about?

I'm so, so, so very surprised.

Jimmmy, you're doing no end of harm to anyone who actually has some semblance of knowledge over the area they're talking about when proposing cutbacks. Armchair economists who invariably deal in fact-free rants are the most boring creatures on earth. Try not to turn a serious issue into a little fetishised fantasy world for yourself, please. You do yourself and public discourse absolutely no favours.

Maybe in some cases but they can't just hand it out for nothing IMO. For example, a wind energy company looking for years of data for various sites could take days or weeks to prepare, I think it's only fair that said company should pay for someone else's work.
Day-to-day data should be published in the clear on their website for anyone to see. Archival data should be available at cost. Ireland is actually exceptional in their handling of met data, we're one of the only countries that doesn't publish it freely.

What kind of data are you talking about? There's an enormous amount of data freely available on their website, including climate averages and extremes, daily data going back 6 months, and latest reports.
