Solicitor for house purchase?

    Hi

So we're hoping to go to sale agreed on a place in Kilcock in the next day or two. But one thing we're having trouble with is choosing a solicitor. I rang around a few places last week and all seem to charge in and around the same (1000 + vat + fees), with one notable exception offering a flat rate of 1500euro all in.

Is there anything to be wary of with the type of solicitor who charges a flat rate fee?
Any advice on the best way to choose a solicitor?

    Thanks

Ask a friend who's bought a house and see how they got on. A word of mouth recommendation would carry more weight with me personally. Get a few good ones and check out their prices.

Only word of mouth recommendation I've had is from my sister's solicitor and her opinion was "he was ok", but i guess it's hard to rate a solicitor. They either do their job or they dont.

PM him? :P Saying that, we don't know if you're the solicitor in question, so meh, buyer beware.

Word of mouth is key. IMO, if the recommended solicitor was €1000 more than the cheap one, I'd go for the recommended solicitor. Simple reason: the cheap one or the dear one may or may not do sweet f**k all. At least if you know someone who has used one, they'll be able to tell you if they were any good, or sat there looking pretty.

I used Hegatrys solicitors in Maynooth, couldn't fault their service, price was decent too. Cheapest I could find. Ask for Fidelma.
