The Print Is Out

What do people think of the new paper? Great, good, bad, a good start etc.....

    Print%20Cover.preview.jpg

Little Old Me (Just a personal opinion, dont chuck things...)
Firstly, Rob delivers. The contents page (first one I went to) in particular looks lovely. Fontwise they've upped the game a little too (By which I mean Comic Sans is dead). The design has come on in leaps and bounds from The Spoke.

    The magazine looks very good.

In terms of the content of the paper but, i have to say I'm dissapointed. Its still the third eh...'best' paper on campus behind the maders at Alive and even An Phoblacht.

Maybe its small college vibe, where you have to see everyone all the time and dont want to make things awkward but for a student paper not to be asking serious questions (a la...most student papers) of the college admininstration at the minute is not good. The balance is completely amiss. Take The College Tribune or the Trinners paper where its 80% News/20% Entertainment. Thats the way a college paper, or any paper, should be.

I'll submit some stuff for the next one, I think more people should. The paper should be stimulating serious debate and talk on campus, this is just more of the same content wise. Look, we're all in college for a laugh and a good time, but college papers play a serious role on campus.

The piece on the Programme For Gov. is very good. As far as entertainment stuff goes, I enjoyed the DOD interview.

So in conclusion: An improvement, time'll tell how it pans out. Balance is still completely amiss. Nice to see more names appearing too, and ones that are coming from the broader-student base. Thats the way forward really, more and more people writing for the paper, different styles and content.

I just get the vibe the paper doesn't take itself seriously enough or something along those lines?
    ---

Interested in hearing other peoples responses, maybe most people think its class, me no know. Thread'll give us an idea. NOT THE SPOKE equals one vote of critical support, with a heart of hope for the year ahead. Issue 1 will hopefully pull in loads of new students from all over.

I'm working on something for the next two issues (my only thing in terms of content)

Also, sorry about the front page. There was a better one, but... long story.

I am eerily proud of that.

Alot of the design credit has to go to Keith Broni, my partner in last-minute-oh-no-we've-to-design-a-magazine-all-nighter-****. He's a photoshop wiz with a great eye for things.

Next issue (hopefully) will be more through-composed.

The next issue will be a vast improvement on what has already been a vast improvement on The Spoke. There were several "teething problems" involved in the completion of the first issue, but those will be fully rectified come the second issue.

As for anyone with any deep-seated complaints / critiques, the only real answer to them is to get involved and help out myself, Eoin and Rob in creating the best publication possible. In terms of the quality of content, we can only put in what the students themselves send us.

Send all submissions / inquiries to theprint@nuimsu.com.

We need another computer. Think the tech labs would let us use an iMac in the evenings?

I thought the content was fine for a first issue. Design - brilliant. Just watch out for the oul typos.

True enough, a paper is only as good as whats submitted to it, and on a design front this is a vast improvement. I'd suggest they get in touch with societies like Soc/Pol and try and level out the balance content wise a little that way.

    When is issue 2 due?
Also credit where its due to what I'm told by Rob was very much a 'late night crew' of hardsloggers.

In all the places the spoke was. On all those little stands around the arts block and stuff. Think if you head to the SU there'll be copies lying around outside the offices. :)

Not seen any in the JH.

Ah, the joys of spending the vast majority of my time in Education House >_< Ok, I'll look round tomorrow....

Sitting beside funky penguin in lecture. Should I come on to him?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭ScissorPaperRock

I don't know who he is but maybe you should lightly touch his hair and whisper "so soft" just loud enough for him to hear, and then when he turns around just act like nothing ever happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

    Hahahahahaha!

    Anything more subtle?

Hmmm... maybe wink at him suggestively while and then like lick your finger, that should cause some confusion for him.

Got my copy today and am currently reading over it with the intentions of offering more in-depth feedback. First impressions are that it looks awesome (bar the David O'Dotherty interview; who chose that background?). Well done to all involved.

However, I was slightly disappointed to see my pro-fees bit didn't reach the final draft, especially since it was in up to the last draft I saw. :( I don't mean to sound like I'm giving out, cause I'm not; I realise that there's only so much room to fit in stuff, and the fees debate may have become irrelevant given the info that did make it in.

But given I spent a few hours on two articles, neither of which made it, could someone not have had the decency to spend 60 seconds sending me an email to say they weren't going to be in? As I said, I'm not particularly mad or anything, and it's not a major deal. Both articles were probably prime to be cut given events that occured between writing and publication. Still think someone could have sent off a nice "Thanks but no thanks" message though :/ One thing that really annoyed me with the Advocate paper was this sort of lack of communication....

Anyway, moving on, if there's anything I can do for the next issue Banquo, let me know. Out of interest, is the point-counter point section permenantly cut, or was it just for the first issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

My bad. There was just such a huge amount of submissions! Although we were agonising over the fees point/counter-point articles because both were pretty good. In the end, though, the anti-fees article was suddenly made irrelevant (Eoin waited up to hear the news just to make sure!), and we couldn't just have the counter-point.

You fancy re-wording it as an independent article? I'll ask the same thing of the opposition. Not my call if it gets in though, so no use flattering me :D

Same. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to scan a copy or use the original file and put it up on the SU site for people who have left the college to be able to read?

It could give not only college students but also perspective students and alumni, as banquo said in his interview viewable online in text form, a "reason to visit" the Union Website.

If you have overhauled the spoke and replaced it with something new and shiny that you are proud of, why not show it off?

It would surely be easy enough to have it downloadable as a .pdf file on the website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

This file was 44megs. I'm sure we can stick up a lower quality version ( that looks the same )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 346 ✭✭trekkypj

PDF would be handy alright for people not on campus anymore (like me ;) ) but you lose something when you go from paper to pdf. That's why I hate ebook readers so much... it just doesn't feel right.

You guys still using that ancient ol rattlebag G4 Mac for the paper? Man, but that machine has seen a lot of issues... might be time to buy a new iMac and newer DTP software if so...

My Union days seem distant now. But I remember waaaaay back when it was sill The Spoke 'newseypaper' and Ger Healy was in his first year as President.... I used to do Union Council reports for the paper, before I became older and scarred and cynical

Sounds like you guys are doing a fine job - there's not nearly enough griping to suggest you mucked it up! Just remember you can only keep some of the people happy some of the time... ;)

Opinions on the latest? Was distributed yesterday, haven't seen it myself.

Main question: Does anyone think the font is too big/small? Haven't seen it on paper yet :(

Edit: I already know about the part where we're ugred ''not to walk home at night''. Like, ever.

I like how it focused on important things like the lack of a canteen, instead of "top 5 best movies evar!!!1!1" lists like last year... and more people seem to be reading it too because of this :) or at least those I've talked to anyway. The interviews were really good too, although i lol'd at the vegetarian recipes that included fish :D

All in all, a pretty good issue methinks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Only one was supposed to be a veggie recipe, unlike the mag a few years ago that had ^only^ veggie ones :D

It has a bloody brilliant letter about John O' Donoghue, a BRILLIANT piece on the canteen, classical music, sudoku, a Hot Chip interview (do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it now...), a good piece on education, snaps from Halloween, some good SU reports, and some sexy blokes review of a book on the Stickies.

Its rare I'd remember anything that was in The Spoke five minutes after putting it down.

I see John Hughes getting slated in an article too, great new departure. College paper should spark debate like that. People will take the paper a lot more seriously if its raising questions and not just republishing statements.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

+1 on that John O'D letter. Very well written.

Well done to everyone involved, progress is certainly being made!

There's a bunch on the stand in Arts block by the back door, and on the bookshelf by the newspapers in the library.

Working to get y'all a link to the pdf now...
