    What happens if the person who has the bike says it's hers?

    How do either persons prove who owns it? I mean it could be secondhand and even a receipt doesn't prove that the bike is actually the one that was stolen?

    take the serial no or leave a note under the saddle.

    should really have called the cops and let them sort it out with whoever came to unlock the bike.
