Oh jeez, the ultimate standards in cheesy superficial pop but I'll give you prince and the pet shop boys. The 80s were good for Metallica and Megadeth, thats it. Nowadays the old hits are mostly used for cringeworthy saturday night occassions. Yes there was some good cheese, like Take on Me, classic, but the problem with the 80s was the uniformity of the sound, everything was synthesized, everything that had any remote success in the charts had that 80s gorgonzola layered on top of it, connected to a yuppie gordon gecko greed is good aesthetic which debased music to a mere commercializiation antithetical to the logic of art.

some of us were fans of regan and thatcher ;)

This whole thing is ridiculous! There must be five new bands on myspace every day of the last decade, yeah, none of em beat Black eyed peas to the top of the chart but does that make their music any worse? I think this decade actually showed pop music taking a bit of a step back against Rock anyway, with the likes of the Mars Volta and Slipknot hitting top of the billboard charts!

    My favourites of this decade:
The mars volta, modest mouse, broken social scene, streetlight manifesto, arctic monkeys, Interpol, Justice, A lotta the new electro stuff, KOL (well their first three) and theres more i jus cant think of :)

Its also been a decade full of amazing albums from late nineties bands, take QOTSA for example, ATDI, even Rush put out one of their best albums in twenty years ffs!

I'd hate to think OP that ye had missed out on all this when it was happenin, only to realise in twenty years, that those vintage noughties albums were amazing.

I must admit though, the 80's revival pop is killing me. La roux needs a cannonball to the face.

The more I think about it, the more I think this has been the greatest decade for music ever. Just take the year 2000 alone -

    Lambchop - Nixon
    Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
    Radiohead - Kid A
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists etc.
    Ryan Adams - Gold
    Calexico - Hot Rail
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea

I only picked the opening year of the decade there and only picked a few albums. The diversity is music today is just great and I honestly can't keep up with the amount of great stuff out there..

There's not much bands formed in this decade that you can say , "Wow they are going be around for a long time and selling out venues for years to come....

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,791 ✭✭✭speedboatchase

Well let's count back to 1999 rather than simply this decade and look at some successul bands formed in last ten years - Arcade Fire, Kasabian, The Killers, Kings of Leon, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, MGMT, Bloc Party. These guys are gonna be around quite a while I think and selling out venues. For certain genre's it's been a great decade (indie, pop) and for others not so much (heavy rock, hip hop)

Not a "lost decade" by any stretch of the imagination, 1995-2000 were absolutely god-awful

    Hmm.

Arcade Fire - I dont really like them, but people seem to so I will grant it.
Kasabian - Erm, no. Also part of the 1-2 song per album brigade.
Killers - One half-good album, does not a summer make.
KOL - Middle of the road garbage. Rock for knackers.
    Strokes - See Killers
    AM - See Strokes
    MGMT - See AM
    Bloc Party - See MGMT

Your final statement sums it up. Go get some taste in music.

I don't like half those bands, but they will be around for the next decade and be pretty successful. Thestatement was "Wow they are going be around for a long time and selling out venues for years to come...." which is a statement of probable success, not an endorsement - I don't care what your actual opinion of the groups were. My favourite bands would be the likes of Vampire Weekend, The Cribs, Phoenix, Chromeo etc, great groups from this decade. All hail this decade etc etc

    It's all about taste!

I like very few bands that emerged in the past decade. Music made by bands/artists from the 70's/80's (eg Bruce, Sir Elton, Mark Knopfler, Waterboys etc...), in the past decade, now that's a different story.

That's a good point, actually. Plenty of bands from previous decades put out some good stuff in this. It's the new bands that are a pile of rubbish. I could count on one hand the number of naughties bands that I got into.

Outta millions o bands in this last decade, ye shud seriously look harder!

  • Registered Users Posts: 100 ✭✭xual

Its like this. If telly or radio is the medium that bands are to be discovered on, then good luck!

Celeb and reality driven tripe shoved down the throats of people. If you look you'll find some awesome bands.

point in case ie.myspace.com/therealbeefsupreme one among many bands no one anywhere has every heard anything about. Carlow ?? Who ever heard of anything in carlow.. I think they had sugar factory :-)

I can't get enough of the stuff.. They'll probably never make it anywhere, but they're a good band on the 00-09 "abyss"

Sorry I have to say it one more time.. TV is so ****. tv3?? mongo network, expose!!! Xfactor.. ghost hunters!!!!!!! what the **** are they using to hunt ghosts?? who ever build a machine to find a ghost?? Where did they test it.

Oliver reed would spin in his grave

    With 90% sounding the same...

I'm stuck in the 70's/80's when it comes to music. That's where I'm happy and that's where I am staying until the 80's comes back again. Like fashion, the music is going to have to come around again. I hope.

There is one band from this decade that I can see sticking around for quite a while that I really like and that is The Gaslight Anthem. Yes you have your Muses, Placebo's, or whatever...no doubt they are going to stick around for ages. But I simply can't stand them.

You've got to split it. Are you going to be biased and judge it by the music you like to listen to? Or are you going to be unbiased and recognise that a band you don't like is going to be around for a good while, like in my case, Muse?

Listening to one generation is like listening to one genre. Extremely narrow minded. If that's what you like that's what you like but to be honest, it means that you have less knowledge and therefore, less argumentative power than someone who listens to much more music than you do.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31,942 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

No it's not, I would consider Elton John, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Status Quo and Duran Duran as 5 different genres of music. Throw me in some Beach Boys, Bee Gees and away we go! All big bands from the 80's. I also like the Rockabilly style from the 50's and 60's.

Anywho, I really like music of that generation, I never said I wouldn't or don't listen to other generations or genres. How do I know that I don't like Muse or Cascada? Because I listened to them.

As a Music Tech student, I have to take a listen to all to genres to understand the characteristics for recording purposes. In my leisure time, I'm going to listen to the music from those genres because that's what makes me happy.

I think this decade has been pretty disappointing but hey, there's another decade to come and I'm hopeful!

IMO there is no such thing as bad music; There's just music you like, and music you don't like. In fairness, it's all about opinion - you can't really tell someone they're wrong when it comes to their music tastes.
For me, 2009 hasn't been a great year in music. It hasn't been all bad, mind you. But the decade has been a great one. Its the first decade where I've listened to music from start to finish. Some of the artists that stand out for me are:

Beck - Sea Change, Guerro and especially Modern Guilt
Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormentors, You are the Quarry
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
    Wu-Tang Clan - Iron Flag
    Bob Dylan - Modern Times
Steve Vai - Real Illusions: Reflections
Dr. Dre - 2001 (actually released late '99, but meh)
    Arcade Fire - Funeral
    Sigur Ros - Takk...
    Ween - Quebec
    Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
The Mars Volta - De Loused in the Comatorium, Amputechture
PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea
    Melody Gardot - Worrisome Heart
    Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
    Interpol - Antics
    The National - Alligator
    Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist (am I the only one who thought this was a great album?)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There's definitely more that I could throw up but you get the idea. I'm looking forward to seeing what these artists will offer us in the next decade.

most of those acts didnt begin thier career in this decade but perhaps that is not relevant to this thread

I pointed that out earlier and tried to divide my argument. It's pretty hard to to do but simplified:

Music released by bands who were formed pre-2000, was generally pretty good to brilliant. E.g, Magic and The Rising by Bruce, unreal albums!

Music by bands formed in the past decade, has been pretty disappointing.

    That's IMO...again, IMO!

Agreed. That has actually been the crux of my point, perhaps I didn't flesh it out enough. It's the majority of new bands that I have a problem with. Plenty of good music from pre-2000s bands. But not enough good new bands.

Also, I love this statement being thrown at me that I "havent been looking hard enough" or I have been "looking too much in mainstream media". Biggest strawman of all, kids. Biggest strawman of all.

I remember when Nevermind came out and my friends all agreed it was quite boring and repetitive. Generally it was worth two songs. Then "Smells" became a hit and it started selling bucket loads and people stating it the best album of the time. It still rates very highly.

Still think it is way overrated. Time changes everything

I never liked Nirvana. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, et al were far better candidates in that genre.

No you're definitely not the only one. I think it's better than both Machina's for a start. I really love Zeitgeist, and it still sounds great a couple of years later.

Probably is if that's your style! Besides Sigur Ros and Albert Hammond Junior, Elbow and Daft Punk, I wouldn't really like most of those bands but I'm gonna give a few bands, out of your list, a go to see if I can change my mind about it.
I'm all up for giving things a chance.

thats all you can do, give some a listen. its all completely subjective really but that list is a bit varied in style/genre. Id recommend highly Ok Computer's No CV though it may be tough to find these days besides amazon etc.

Don't mean to wander too much OT here but, I actually only bought Nevermind recently. I'd heard the whole album through many a time, but I only properly listened to it when I bought it. I think it's a great album, but I don't think (as many seem to), that it defines the grunge era. Maybe it gets so much acclaim because it was grossly overplayed, especially on MTV. I always thought the Meat Puppets were better!
