Don't agree Degsy, I'm a woman, very good sportswoman in fact, and all I got was raised eyebrows. My friend, a man, worked there and said they found it quite intimidating. I train outside now with my other half and a friend. The amount of times I've been given slack is unreal. Was in a really good gym but too many members. Have our own jacuzzi so don't miss that.

    Where did you train?

NRG Galway. I suppose I'll be told now it's not a good gym but I just felt at the time it ticked all my boxes.

There arent too many women in my weights room but there was one outstandingly gorgeous one in last night..nobody gave her a second glance(apart from when she couldnt see;)) and the reason is that its bad form to ogle people in the gym.
There's also a part of my gym thats for women only which is actually more sexist than anything else i've seen.
Gyms being full of peopel is always a pain but sometimes it can be beneficial if you find a good group to work in with, spot you or whatever.

Not a waste of time really.. I did it alot in Leavin Cert year and it gave be a bit of a bigger frame which I still have. Used to be skinny, now I'm a bit stocky and pudgy which I prefer.

Not too sure really, dont think you can call it a waste of time unless there is something else more important to be done. IMO its a good way for people who arent particularly sporty to get fit, instead of trying to join a GAA/Soccer team where they might get laughed out of the place. One of my good friends really changed his life around by going to the gym and taking it seriously so for people such as him, no way is it a waste of time.

However if you spend €500 or so on a years membership and only happen to go once every few weeks for a slight jog and a few sit ups then I would think its a waste of money. From previous experiences I've found out you need to be extremely dedicated to make joining a gym worth the money.

Christ that is hilarious. Muscle turning to fat - what in the same way that chalk turns into cheese if you leave it long enough! :D

I dont go to a gym but i have invested in a decent threadmill and while losing weight is a slow process, after afew weeks I noticed a big difference in my energy levels and stamina. 2 years ago Id be puffing like a steam train when walking up a steep hill. Now I can power walk up it and not really break a sweat.

So yeah, imo joining a gym (and actually going to it with some regularity) is worth it

Oh you just wait. One day, you'll be walking along, minding your own business and a burning beam will fall down on you. Your puny arms will try to lift it but you'll fail and you'll die and your last thought as that burning beam crushes the life out of you (a single tear rolling down your cheek) will be why oh why didn't I go to the gym and bench press. I'd have owned this burning beam if I had.

That's why I go to the gym.

I was busy with work and real life. Degsy's totally right tho. It's a little know fact that creatine and protein make your balls fall off. I was talking to him about it last night cos one of his dropped and went rolling around the gym. Shoulda seen us chasing it like mad men.

    it makes one feel good!!

Agree I find that when I go gym I feel little bit better about myself afterwards

Sometimes I fell so good though and might go and have a Supermacs or Macdonlds which then defeats the purpose:D

But in general have agree with you and i think if you were ask regular gym goers they say same

The gym is a bit pointless if your not using that whey protein stuff.I'm not too sure but I think it's the stuff they give to Bulls to make them all big and muscley.I went to the gym for a good two months and must have done thousands of bicep curls and situps but I didn't get any bigger. If I had of used that whey steroid stuff it wouda made a difference.

Had to say Hanley thank you. Thank you very much. The lulz were mighty on this thread :D

Gyms for me? I never got on with them at all. Even in my youth when I was very fit. Then again I was the stripped down racing snake aerobic type so gyms wouldn't have held any appeal. Certainly gyms at the time. It was running and cycling for me. I ignored and disregarded weights which I know now was dumb on my part. A few years back I went to one as a guest of an ex. It still didnt appeal for some reason. Not just that I was half dead doing anything. Oh how the mighty have fallen.:) One disadvantage of remaining skinny over the years is less motivation. If I had turned into a fat git I would have kept fitter I reckon.

Like anything you'll get the results equal to the effort you put in. In a gym or at home.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I like the gym. I don't get people who spend hours in them trying to lift some heavy stuff just for the sake of it. But everyone to their own, I guess.

I only ever did the cardio stuff, as it helps you live longer.

One disadvantage is when you have to give up, it's hard to change eating habits.

I've been out of the gym and martial arts on doctors orders since august, and won't be able to go back until may. But I stupidly kept eating the big pasta dinners, and put on almost 2 stone.

So, it's back to baked fish for every meal now :P

if you are lifting heavy you wouldnt spend hours in the gym, 1 hour MAX, its when you do cardio in the gym that it takes up hours. i hate doing non sport exercise outside gym(for example running on the road or in a field)

More Irish people should do it. We as a nation make the Americans look good in terms of the amount of overweight people per head of the population.

A good HIIT session can be done in 30 minutes including warm up/down !

You can do what you like in the gym..spend as little or as much time as you want and dont listen to internet experts.

Yes, I have been to America 5 times. I was in Vegas and NYC/NJ in August/September. The last two times I've been to it (2007 & 2009) I've noted how the people were in far better shape than the people over here. Certainly the ratio of obese people to people in shape is alot higher here than it is there.

Our ratio is quite similar to the UK.

New York is a bit of an exception I must admit but it is in so many ways. However as somebody who travels to America at least twice a year to different areas they are fatter by a long stretch. I tried to find a chart of the levels but couldn't, I did remember reading the figures before and Ireland was going up but a lot less than the UK as I recall.

I have yet to see an Irish person even close to the size of people I have seen in the UK or the US. In one place there was service booths for cash transactions but the last three were twice the size of the others. The were actually bigger to accommodate the operators who still had to squeeze in. Maybe they all hide in this country.

I can't believe you were in Vegas and thought the people were thinner there than here. Been three times and there are tons of people using electric scooters because they were so fat. Go to Disney World and it is worse, because there is walking involved people hire them to be lazy as opposed to really needing them. However if I had to carry around the weight of another person I would get tired too.
