Maybe it's a uni shop that sells photocopies of popular books that have sold out?

I'm not overly familiar with Irish copyright law, but in most countries it's still illegal even if the book if out of print.

There's one of those Espresso book printing machines over in Blackwells in London, bit too far to go to buy a book if you ask me: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/apr/24/espresso-book-machine-launches

I doubt if any local Galway book shop has the money right now to invest $175,000 on one of these (all perfectly legal mind you).

Do you mean the secretariat in college where they sell handouts for lectures? Like photocopies of key course texts all gummed together into a booklet?

If it's out-of-print books you're interested in, maybe try Google Books or Project Gutenberg?
