gigity I read through the essential ciritiea and I don't know what would be the equialvent to a "IHCD Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA) Award" in the south, "completed at least 6 months working in NIAS Patient Care Services" i presume that my time in a rescue service and a vol ambulance would cover this though

If it's about a NIAS recruitment issue:

    Human Resources Department, Employee Recruitment
    Tele: 028 9040 0912

If not, there are other contact numbers at:
    http://www.niamb.co.uk/docs/contact_us.html#IDT_07

Apologies, I always look for a definitive answer when one isnt always available.

You actually answered my question, I should have phrased it more carefully. Im looking for the more active organisation. Just received a mail from OMAC so I guess I will give them a shot on the basis they are the first to get back to me.

Thanks guys, I will let you know how I get on!

Hi Bored-stupid how are you fairing out with the order in Dundalk or did you go to the Red Cross??

The UK IHCD Ambulance Technician course is (after the hours and 1 years probation has been completed) recognised by PHECC as a Paramedic level and you get paid for your placements / probation.

How do you know this is true?? where you talking to somebody from phecc?? or know somebody that has done it??

Both, the PHECC source stated that once the training completed exceeded the PHECC education and training guidelines it would be recognised by them at that level, so the IHCD Amb Tech course plus a years experience exceeds the Paramedic Training requirements in Ireland.

Thats a years experience after the placements are completed not including the placements.

Thats brilliant, but what about the likes of the EMT1 course run by the likes of West Mids Amb and North West Amb? Would they be equivalent to paramedic too on account of the length of training? Also I don't think its possible to do the IHCD tech course privately..

Thats what I thought but phoned and it turned out that they changed the criteria, in relation to the driving and also what you needed to apply.
Im going to call them tomorrow again and see what they say!

I applied to Northern Ireland because it has what am i looking for in a training course.

The course i am in at the moment is FETAC level 5 in Fire and Ambulance.

Exams next week: Human Growth and Development, Introduction to Nursing and Anatomy and Physiology.

How is this fire and ambulance?

If its the course I think it is, its an introductory course, designed to prepare course students for a future career in the service. It touches on basic aspects of the job and allows the student to evaluate their own suitability to life in the emergency services. Human development, anatomy/physiology etc. is an integral part of an EMT/paramedic's training so thats why they're covering it.

It's not the course in Limerick College of Further Education on Mulgrave street (if thats the course you thinking of)

I heard that was ok and is up to standard. The instructors are PHECC registered also.

    I am sorry i didn't go there. :(

Same, applied beginning of March I think, still haven't heard anything.

They extended the deadline at least twice. Whenever they emailed me about changing the criteria, the only difference I could see was that they had moved the driving part of the assessment until after the interview instead of before? Was there much else changed?

the main thing they changed was that originally it implied that after you finished your training you would be a permenant employee of the ambulance service and then they amended it to say that you would not be guarenteed a job upon completion of training.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 450 ✭✭gigity gigity

From memory I believe they made changes so that people with other training courses could apply if they had these but didnt match the original criteria.

i applied up the north as well and havent heard anything. so rang the recruitment company on friday and they said to ring the ni ambulance service i did but they didnt ans will ring on monday and see what they say.
would anyone recommend a driving school that teaches c1 and d1. i realise its a waste of time doing these licences but ive an authomatic b licence so the smaller the truck the better.

what part of ireland are you in?

its not a waste of time only doing d1/c1 if thats all you want!

are you involved with any voluntary ambulance groups, i know the civil defence (sometimes) will let you use their vehicles, and (sometimes) someone will volunteer their time to teach you. it probably depends on the cd officer in charge.

    Irish Red Cross

    Order of Malta Ambulance Corps

    St Johns Ambulance Service

    Civil Defense

I wouldn't say any are better than the rest, however the first three are primary vol ambulance services. Ambulance work is only a small part of CD.

thanks a million. will try those three tomorrow then.

I have to sit two tests maybe a number test (since they mentioned calculators will be provided) and a written test relevant to the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭MN_Medic

What information did you get on the tests and when are they happening? I'm waiting to be called also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭houndsoflove

I got the test for the 20th of May. Each person will be given their own personal ID number contained on the letter and you have to bring this with you.

You need your driving license too other wise you won't be allowed to sit the test.

If you can't make it on the day, they state they can't guarantee you another time.

Won't take holidays into account either.

Letter arrived this morning, test in just under 2 weeks. Am away from home at the minute so had to get someone else to open it for me, from what they read out can I presume this stage is just an aptitude test and there will be no interview style questions or anything paramedic related? Although I see someone has posted that the written questions will be relevant to the job, so maybe not so much your standard aptitude as such but more of a written exercise where background knowledge will be required? Can anyone shed any light?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭houndsoflove

I was the person who said that we will get two short tests relevant to the post (job).

A numerical test (if anything is going to blow it for me it with be this test, i'm useless at maths!)

The other test is written. I'd say it's about yourself and your work experience. Not sure tho.

If there are any paramedics on here that can help us out it would be very appreciated. :)

i got all excited this morning when i heard post come in the door, was sure it was the letter from the north.. then it turned out to be an eflow bill.... boo!!!

    hopefully tomorow

Just sat the NIAS 'paramedic in-training' ability tests earlier today. I have done similar tests before and without doubt this was the toughest to date. More difficult questions and less time to do them in than I had ever imagined / had previously experienced..
However the staff at the test were very friendly, helpful and courteous, so it wasn't all bad.
Will be very, very surprised if I get shortlisted for next stage. Anyone yet to sit their test yet, best of luck. Word is that they intend to take 72 new recruits (4 intakes) over 2 years , the first of which will be October 2010.

Cheers for that Pathway. Yeah I had to do online ability tests for a different job within the HSC a few months ago and they were deadly! Nothing like ones I've done for other jobs! Didn't get to the next stage for that so not looking forward to this one either. We can only do our best tho, you've given it a shot, you might be pleasantly surprised! Maybe if we all do crap the pass mark will be really low! Lol. So just to confirm this stage is just testing your written and numerical skills and we don't need to go and research and brush up on paramedic related things yet? And one last question, what were people wearing? I'm presuming there's no formal dresscode for the aptitude stage but it didn't say on the letter and I would hate to show up too casually if everyone else was suited/dressed up!

Yeah, hopefully it will be a low pass mark. I ran out of time on both tests and guessed loads by the end. Verbal reasoning and numerical .... no paramedic specifics at this stage.. Everyone was dressed jeans/casual incl myself. Very best of luck!!

Well? How did the test go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 450 ✭✭gigity gigity

Was difficult enough, didnt get all of section two finished, but I doubt many would..
Dont quote me but I dont think it is designed to be finished just to see how you react under the time pressure.

    When are you doing yours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 450 ✭✭gigity gigity

Sorry mate just realised that you have already done yours! doh.

Do you think that they will use negative marking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 lushguy57

do you think they will use negative marking?
