I was coming back from Delvin to Mullingar today and noticed a stretch of 1km of brand new road all ready to use. Is this going to be extended . It is taking out some of the extreme bends off that stretch but it needs to be connected to the new stretch to Delvin. Any replys much apreciated

It's been sitting there like that for over a year. No idea when they plan to put it in use.

They want to do the 'missing link' south of Mullingar too, see this . Titter :p

Secondary schemes are often multiyear drib and drab funded projects ...eg the N59 in Roscahill .

That Delvin one ran out of €€s in 2008 and no more €€s arrived in 2009

    http://www.westmeathcoco.ie/en/media/Mullingar Area Minutes 9 Mar 2009.pdf
6.18 Cllr.D.McCarthy: That Westmeath County Council would seek a meeting with the N.R.A. to impress upon them the importance of providing funding for the completion of the road at Rathconnell and in order to finish the work at Turin and at the Beehive.

    Reply:

In 2008, Westmeath County Council completed the construction of 600 metres of new road,
off the existing road alignment at Rathconnell. The Council sought funding from the NRA
to tie-in the completed section to the existing road in 2009. However, this funding has not
    been allocated to date.

Cllr.McCarthy stated he was disappointed that no funding has yet been made available.
He proposed that the Mullingar Area Director would request the County Manager to seek a
meeting with the National Roads Authority in relation to the N52 at Rathconnell. Cllr.Bourke
seconded the proposal and agreed that as a lot of funding and hard work has been spent on the
N52 Delvin Road, it would be important that funding is made available to allow work to
    continue.

It was agreed that this matter would be brought to the attention of the County Manager.

And there it may remain for many more years, the "Roscahill Bog Rampart" section of the N59 took about 5 years to do and it a mile in length . It was funded ( I think) in 2003 , a drib more cash in 2007 and finished in 2008 or 2009

My way of looking at it is that knocking ditches and giving people anything other than a high ditch or a soft bog to crash into is in itself an improvement ...even if they don't finish it for 5 years as is often the case with National secondary road projects .

The N52 then N51 from Mullingar to Athboy ( via Delvin) is an absolute horror of a road , I had to drive the western end of the N51 about 5 mile n/e of Delvin once after it was heaved about and buckled by the bog underneath it , I shoulda brought a bloody lunar buggy not a car :(

Not sure why you're laughing - a funding crisis is a crisis, not a laughing matter.

Schemes like this, although small, are just as important in a national context - no point driving on motorways only to complete the last few kilometres of a journey on a rollercoaster dirt track. The southern scheme from Mullingar-M6 is interesting and we need to close gaps like these in the network.

Its not even Mullingar-M6, its a much smaller amount than that. The N52 was upgraded for some distance north of Tyrellspass as part of the M6 works, and its been upgraded for some distance south of Mullingar with the N52 Mullingar BP and the Belvedere realingments, so its just a tiny piece of utterly terrible road in between two very good bits.

What are you moaning about spacetweek, the country is chocka with substandard dangerous and heavily trafficked secondary N roads , every county has 10-20km of National Secondary projects on the boil in case the NRA dispenses a shekel here and there .

The N67 east of Kinvara is a diabolic **** of a road and makes that missing link south of Mullingar look like a veritable motorway , never mind the N56 west of Monte Carlo

With 2 or 3 sizeable schemes complete in the past 10 years and that one half done the N52 has fared much better than most secondary roads in Ireland .

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but have these roadworks been completed yet on the N52 outside Delvin?

  • Registered Users Posts: 667 ✭✭✭BelfastVanMan

    Still ongoing.

It seems to be going on forever! Do they have a skeleton crew working?

I drove this route just after xmas in the rain and dark, and it was a horrific journey!
