I've a problem selecting a suitable wireless card for my build. I've already ordered Windows 7 64-bit, but my mate who's going to be putting my rig together said he can't find a wireless card thats compatable with 64 bit??!! :(

I want something thats stable esp when gaming online.

Can any of you guys link me to a suitable card? I have the silver netopia broadband unit as my broadband .

    There's plenty out there.

My friend uses an el cheapo USB adapter he got from Ebuyer and it works fine on his Windows 7 x64 OS. Hell, the drivers are even installed by Windows Update (again, el cheapo). Another friend's new laptop has 7 x64 on it and the built-in device works without the need for a driver installation.

Chance this (not the same as my friend's no-name brand, but should work nevertheless):

btw, don't use a USB dongle if you plan on doing online gaming.

99% of cards will be automagically detected by Windows 7.

I am using W7 64 bit too, with a crappy belkin card that doesn't even have 64bit drivers to download, and it automatically got generic chipset drivers for me :)
In short, don't sweat it too much :D

Here's the final set-up that I ordered and should have delivered next week. Used ebuyer, overclockers and Komplett.

The total sum inc deliver for all was €1200, which I know is probably a few hundred over priced but considering my budget was €1,500 and its my first time to spec out a custom build I guess I can only learn :)

Once again thanks to every one that contributed to this thread with there expert advice and tips. Really could not have done it any other way.

I'll pop up a few pics when I get it sorted.

    Thanks.

Pointless buying an "N" adapter if your wifi router is the Netopia "G"

    It's backward compatable to G.

It lets him have an upgrade path for a N Router.

Do you tell the person buying a 5850 that unless they have 3 Monitors it is pointless?

    That's a lovely machine, FOAK.

The RAM will let you down, not in gaming, but if you're heavily into HD video production with Sony Vegas/Aivid/Adobe Premiere/Adobe After Effects, and real-time audio effects processing in Adobe Audition/Protools/Reason, etc., but you can always upgrade at a later date if you're that way inclined. Gaming wise, 4GB is more than plenty these days.

Best of luck with the build and the OS installation. Hopefully it will go smoothly to plan for you. :)

Oh Shush you! The ram is perfectly fine. Doubling the cost of the ram will give him an increase in synthetic benchmarks but for real life applications its fine :P

but sure they are backwards compatible anyway (unless you're using A, in which case it's time for an upgrade anyway). It's a wee bit of speculative future proofing for little additional cost.

Btw Four of a Kind, i forgot to say, the drivers and software that comes with the card aren't great (it's a cheapo after all). It's a bog standard Ralink chip though, as found in the likes of the MSI wind and that, so if you find yourself having bother with it better to go direct to the Ralink website and download the drivers for the 2860 (found here). Seems to solve most issues with it.

Ramdisk - Solid State Drive (SSD). Are these both the same? A poster earlier in this tread suggested that I get a SSD and run win 7 and a few select items off it.

Could someone give me a run down of what exactly a ramdisk/SSD would enable me to do?

Ramdisks are more for servers than anything else.

A SSD is essentially a Hugh Flash memory Stick that is 9001 times faster than a HDD as there are no moving parts. The only problem is that they are Very Expensive (Averages to $3/GB compared to something like $0.35/GB for HDDs)
