I want to use cross references to figures in the document in this format: "Fig 1 shows blah blah" I'm not sure how to configure it to do this. edit: No I was mistaken; it increments the numbers for sections etc separately to how it increments for the figures, so it will provide consistent results so long as all the figs are labelled.

As long as you use unique labels for everything, then you shouldn't have any problems. I find it helpful to begin figure labels with 'fig:', equation labels with 'eq:', etc.
