I was going to put Edinburgh up myself Oisin I'm almost definite for that and Cork. They're two weeks apart this year so I'm looking forward to doing both. :D

I'm thinking Rotterdam but the only thing that is getting me is the heat. I've read some comments on marathonguide that they cancelled in 07 due to heat. That seemed a bit extreme for 28 degrees. Must go and check average heat for April. Maybe that was a freakish increase in temp for that day.

Its flat, the timing is perfect and its easy to get to. hmmmmm

You wanna hope the weather is not 2 hot, both of those where very hot last year. 2 in 2 weeks=bring on the pain:)
Im about 90% sure ill be doing Edinburgh so i might see you there.

Seems race day in 07 was a freak day in Rotterdam. Average high's for April are 21 degrees from here. So might be ok.

I did a half marathon in Utrecht in Easter 07 and we had hail, rain, snow, wind, sun. I did the same run last year and it was a very pleasant 16oc.

Yeah I was injured for Edinburgh last year but still went and the heat had me dying from walking in it. So fingers crossed. I've missed those two the last two years through injury so I hope everything will go well this year and I can get them both out of the way. Edinburgh would be my target and I'll take it easy in Cork most likely seeing as Edinburgh is the faster course.

Adding Bratislava, young Marathon, 5th year next year. Thinking of doing the half there as I have some folks working for me there.
Ryanair fly in direct or Aer Lingus to Vienna, less than 1hr in a cab to Bratislava.
It looks like a pretty fast course apart from climbing over some bridges, plus you should not have the crowds from larger city Marathons.

Has anybody ran the Hamburg marathon previously and what did the y think of it. One I am considering.
Apparently fast flat course with 15,000 odd running in April. Direct flights etc.

Contemplating Seville/ Valencia as a potential warm-up for the Connemara Ultra - would give me something to focus on in early 2010 aswell.

Decisions, decisions... Tempted to go for Rotterdam again. However, the novelty of doing a race somewhere new is compelling.

100 marathon club has a good calendar which seems to get regular updates:-

Ath36 I ran Hamburg 1 year ago, it was a great marathon, organisation was excellent, the support was brialliant, highly recommend, the course is flat and a good marathon for a pb. I was going to do it again next year but I never done Rotterdam, so will give it a go instead, but I will definetly do Hamburg again. Most of the stations had powerade, water, some hot energy drink, gel and bananas. Also getting around the city is no hassle with the good train service.

    Does Cork count as Spring?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

It counts. My just-made-up theory: there's only two main seasons for marathons - spring and autumn. You can categorise based on whether the race before summer or after summer or whether you train in winter or summer. Not so sure about a July race, but there aren't too many of them.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

That was my thinking jlang - that they're in the same block of marathons as 'Spring' marathons. If we're being pedantic Belfast and Edinburgh aren't Spring marathons either. :D

yeah the good old treadmill, good thing about it is your where you started when you finish. Bad thing is looking at same walls for the duration is so boring. Tunes are a must:)

KC: Let's get away for a romantic Valentine's weekend break
    OH: Oooh, sounds great.
KC: Oh look, there's a marathon this weekend. And oh look, I packed my runners. And it's only 15 euro. Sure it'd be robbery not to run the race.

Change of plan. No moonlight challenge for me, I've registered for Barca...I mean €45 seriously?! :) Depending on how I do in Barca I'll decide on what event if any I'm doing in Connemara...if I'm struggling in Barca I shall slow the pace and take it easy and then aim towards Edinburgh as my fast marathon with maybe a Connemara half as an additional training run. If Barca goes well and I get my fast marathon I'll see how I recover then run Connemara Ultra if I feel able. I'm most likely doing the Dingle Ultra anyway so running Conn again is no big deal really.

I think thats a mega plan and I don't care what any of yee think. :D

So what programs are people going to be following, how many weeks is it and when do you start.
I have week 1 done and dusted of a 24 week Pfitzinger & Douglas plan, I've adjusted it slightly, instead of a 55 mile or a 70 mile schedule I've gone and split the difference. The 55 was starting off with 3 days off in week 1.

Don't have a clue what program to use yet. Ill sniff a few and pick what i like the look of.

If I decide to do the full in Connemara, I'll probably do the Hal Higdon Novice 2 plan, but with one relatively hilly run a week thrown in. Not sure if I'm quite up to anything more advanced than that.

If you aim for Conn I'd do a lot more than one hilly run RK. Try and get hills in on *every* run and def on your LSRs. Might be worth looking at strength training as well.

(Bearing in mind I've never done it so don't really know what I'm talking about!)

I'm quoting this, a man ADMITING to not knowing what he's talking about. Gold. :D

Still undecided about the training plan, going to flick through my books tomorrow. I (loosely)followed the P&D 55 mile one for Dublin and found it very good.

I foolishly signed up for Valencia about a month ago.
After looking into it a bit more I see that only 3,000 people do it, the majority of which are club runners.
I'm in week 3 of Hal Higdons intermediate 1 plan. Hope it works :)

A woman calling me a MAN - woo hoo!

I wouldn't let it freak you out, it looks fast but not mentally fast - won in 2:23 last year and a sub 3 would put you in the top 250. If there are 3,000 finishers then 3:41ish was the midway point for the field so a bit faster than the likes of Dublin but it looks like it's ordinary runners rather than super fast elites that mainly run it.
