Have any of you guys done the Loch Ness marathon ? if so any comments on it , worth the effort ? thinking about it and Dublin 2010 for my 1st and 2nd marathon.

Wrong thread - Loch Ness is in October and that's not a spring marathon on this side of the world. But anyway, yes, I did Loch Ness 2 years ago. It's a great marathon, well organised, beautiful scenery and I can definitely recommend it.

What I don't recommend is running your second marathon 3 weeks after your first (Loch Ness 3rd October, Dublin 25th October).

Say, you didn't get the Loch Ness date wrong, did you? Or mixed it up with the Inverness HALF marathon in March?

Yeah knew the post could be possibly be in the wrong place but as Cork had slipped in and its in the Summer I thought I would give it a lash .

Dates are right and Loch ness just looked like a nice one to do , appreicate the advice and will proabably only do DCM as I hope to concentrate on Tri's and some adventure races during the summer and dont want too many distractions.

Béal Feirste for me as circumstances mean I won't be able to run around the beautiful streets of Cork this June bank holiday.

Did Belfast in 2008 and found it ok, the course is a bit dull in places but conducive to running a decent time. Nice enough town, too.

Although, as already pointed out, Cork is not a Spring marathon the fact that it is listed those of us planning to enter it should start adding their names to the list. I did it in 2009 and 2008 and it is a really good event. We need to start plugging our local events particularly those that deserve support so as to encourage as many people as possible to participate in them. The course is a little bit hilly but it is well organised and the support is good. As for the group of us going to Rotterdam is anybody else seeing their PB expectations evaporating like me as a result of the weather.

I have added the below post as a thread in its own right but I am adding it here also because a lot of the marathons listed here are overseas and I wouldn't like the frequent travelers among you to miss this fairly important piece if information.



Marathon Running Excluded on Many Travel Insurance Policies
I was reading a post on health insurance earlier when I remembered a shock I got earlier in the year when I discovered that a lot of travel insurance policies exclude participation in marathons. I usually rely on my credit card insurance when travelling but on my last overseas marathon I wasn't using my card so wouldn't have been covered. I set about getting a single trip travel policy but on inspecting the exclusions I saw that marathon running wasn't covered. As it happens I am an insurance broker so I asked one of my colleagues to get a list of the main companies operating in the travel insurance market and was really surprised to discover that a lot of them specifically exclude marathon participation. It is something everyone travelling abroad to compete in a marathon should investigate before they go. The exclusions are generally listed on the policy document but in some cases you might have to request a list of them.

There are cheap flights to Barcelona at the moment. the race is on March 7th. It's currently a balmy 11'C, but should be up to around 16'C (DCM-type conditions) by March.

its due to a fall on the BLOODY ICE im only back now after 5 weeks off because of back problems...:mad:.

Ok IM in for Seville . Is 911 still going?

Krusty would still love to go to Barcelona but flights are 170 quid.:(
Could you advise me on pacing for the marathon ? I manage 22 miles last week at approx 10mm with not an ache anywhere. Had water but not enough and no gels. Can manage 9mm for almost 15 mile outings. What should I be aiming for ... ? 9.30mm on the day?

hot to trot, I was just wondering how you got on in Seville. I'd be interested to know how your pace on the day compared to your long runs. Would you recommend Seville, in terms of the marathon and as as a city.

I Moycullen,
It has a lovely old city with narrow streets and lots of buildings to check out but because of that the marathon is run on the outer wide roads so the scenery isnt that spectacular but nice all the same. I hat being crowded up so it suited me fine.
Lovely start in the olympic stadium but it was 5 degrees at the start but they had lots of barbecue gas heaters to warm up while changing. Lots of loos too and good facilites.
No congestion at all. When you got back they covered you with a lovely souvenir towel and then you got medal and a bag of food and drinks, including beer and minerals on tap. At the expo ( small , dont rely on getting goodies here) we got our bags with technical running cropped bra top and knickers which wont ever see the light of day with me anyway. Entry of €15. How dod they do it!!
I got a pb of 4:11 with one toilet stop so i am happy. I averaged 9.30mm's ish with a few quicker and a few slower miles. Probably could have managed a steady 9.15/9.20 for a good lot of it but I was wary of going mad cos I had to do barcelona 3 weeks later.
Very flat course and well sorted with drinks and orange segments all the way.
After the marathon there is a party with a full hot meal and free drinks...minearls and beer and rock band and prizegiving etc.
ONE THING. The expo is hard enough to access from the town. No direct buses and its a good 3 miles or more which I ended up walking a few times. Taxi about -€8/10. Lots of the irish stayed in the hotel right at the stadium which is a good idea as the important stuff is nearby and you can travel to party in town if you like.
YOu fly to Malaga and get a train over . Allowing for proper transfer times It takes the best part of the day to get there, so dont go onthe saturday and back on the monday am like I did or you will feel like you are constantly on the move. You would need an extra day to relax or explore. weather previous year was 18 degrees =much warmer than 5 at start and 8 at end of this years . This would also influence whether I would go again.

Thanks for all that info and well done on the PB. The spring marathons usually suit me in terms of training although this year was messed up with illness and the big freeze. I'm going to Rotterdam next month and have already done Barcelona, Vienna and Hamburg and have already visited Valencia so Seville sounds like a definite possibility for next Feb. How did you find doing Barcelona so soon after Seville. I really enjoyed Barcelona. Is Seville much smaller in terms of atmosphere etc.

Just to add I'm in for the Connemara Half as a warm up for Edinburgh. Should be good fun.

hot to trot

MOycullen, seville is dfinitley smaller. a field of about 4,000. Plenty of space on the roads to run and great value for €15. Technical running top , shorts, towel , medal , pasta party , post marathon hot meal free minerals and beer with entertaninment while you eat , lots of food and drinks in the goody bag and chip timing.Didnt know at the time but showers were also available on site.
I would advise to stay near the expo if you are going for the weekend as it is a right pain in the ars* trying to get from downtown up to the olympic stadium for the expo and the start/finish.
Full facilities available pre and post run. TEmps vary widely. Was 18 degrees last year. This year was 5-8. Mostly male runners who dont really interact with the crowd much but there was pretty much steady supporters. Lots of drinks, oranges, isotonic drinks on the route and well marshalled. You dont get a very scenic route as the old intersting stuff is down narrow streets and there isnt rom so it tends to run along the broader less central roads but they were still not too bad. And it is totally flat.
YOu train over from malaga central train station. By the time you allow transfers etc you dont have a lot of time left. I took early 7am flight from dublin. Got to seville around 5 ish or later. By the time I made my way to accommodation adn then up to the expo ( had to walk back ) it was about 8.30 before I could sit down and relax. Then up at 6 for the marathon. Left at 7am next mrning to get train to make noon flight. Then four hours back to mayo , Didnt leave a lot of time to sightsee and relax. So unless you live in dublin you would really need another day at least.

hot to trot, that sounds brilliant. I didn't realise it was such a big event. Thats a bigger entry than Valencia. Up to a couple of years ago you needed the services of a Spanish speaking detective just to get details of the event! Its a pity it is such a messy journey. Still it sounds like it is worth the hassle. I wonder is it too early to start a Spring Marathons 2011 thread!!

If you havent already done it racoonqueen it is a must for any self respecting multimarathoner! Aside from the fact that it is a lovely city, as urban marathons go the route is class. I'd jump at that fare if the timing suits you. For airlingus it is amazing that the sale fare is available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
