Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just got word that Canabalt arrived. Hurrah!

I'm building up quite a stack of stuff in the parents. Will have to drop out and pick it all up one of these days. Will make for a smutty afternoon with the camera :)

Hate to bring it up but it's a really poor port of the game done by Tose. It's no where near as bad as the PS1 port but they really ****ed up the music in the game which is one of the best things about it.

... so what would you recommend as the best way to play this game then?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,633 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Sounds like the best way to enjoy it is to not play it and instead just stare at the box and imagine having fun playing it!
This is also the best way to play Rise of the Robots and Duke Forever as it happens.

SNES although the carts are expensive. You could also try emulation. For FF5 you can find a fan translation but it's much better translated than the official square enix translation (that at one point is so bad it tells you to go in one direction while actually meaning the opposite direction). Also there's two versions of FF4, the US version and the japanese version. Japanese version with a fan translation is again the way to go because 1. it's better than the swill that passes for english in the US version and 2. they cut down the difficulty and most of the class abilities in the US version.

For FFIII/6 the GBA port actually isn't too bad and the music is a hell of a lot better but still not as good as the SNES games. However there's some bizarre censorship in the GBA port. Luckily there's no point messing with fan translations because both are translated really well.

Haha sorry! I'm a dope. Thought it was FFIV!

You're grand so, the GBA port is pretty damn good :)

If it was FFIV I'd have a bigger problem with the ATB guage, since the US version has a glitch.

    http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/ATB_Glitch

That's the version I have and I'd noticed it myself before looking it up. No issues with FFVI though, really like the GBA port :)

At least they apparently fixed it for the European release. Couldn't be bothered tracking it down when the PSP port is so easy to find and (presumably) better

Pick up a rare PAL Megadrive blue label variant last night from an Irish ebay seller. (well I at least think it's rare, I've never seen it before)

Here's what F1 by Domark usually looks like in Pal, there are usually a good load of copies on ebay. (As far as I know it was called 'F1 World Chamionship in the US, but just F1 here)

    F1_Coverart.png

Here's the one I picked up (No manual unfortunately). A blue label version with the full title of 'F1 World Championship'.

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/220934335712?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Ebay ended auctions only has one other one of these sold.

Must look into this one more!

Nice little charity shop find today.

No manuals and both games were filthy. Soul calibur had what I can only hope was peanut butter complete with hair stuck to it :( But after a quick clean they look acceptable now. Can't really complain for €2 a piece.

Dublin City council just called to advise me they'll be delivering a skip filled with GET's! on Monday (actually my 'deliver to' app said so).

I'm on vacation on Monday and I'm not going to be in work to collect them. Some decent GET's! at that. :(

    Hello Mrs Retr0,
I met Retr0's dad once, seems like Retr0 v.05 tbh....

Also, has she seen the context of the images?
The fact that Retr0 is trying to be as sneaky as Mr Sneaky the Fox who has just obtained 1st class honours in sneakiness from the Dept of Sneakiness in Trinity College?

Slipping things quietly in the back door again, have we Retr0?? ;)

Playing my new Wonderswan with some nutty Gundam game, I'll figure it out eventually.
There seems a lot of WS games on ebay but the price seems to entirely depend on how understandable they are to english speakers ears!
I have some more games on order, all in all it's a cracking little machine, pity they didn't launch it elsewhere.

Been meaning to grab my copy on the iPad. Is there much of an article on Metal Slug or is it just a page or two?

I was worried it'd just be a bog standard retrospective, full of info I already knew. But it's more interesting that that. It's an article more to do with the games origins and tracing it back through one guy who's come forward as being a member of Nazca (who pretty much just went by their alias in the credits)

Really nice spread too. There's a two pager full of sprites and original artwork.

If you clck to buy a mag in the Retro Gamer app, you can preview every page of the mag before you buy it. Albeit in a super small window, but enough to make out if you want to buy a particular issue.

Checked out the Metal Slug one, think I will buy it as a celebration of adding a Metal Slug X MVS cart to my Metal Slug collection this week. :)

    Turns out I did!
Can't wait to play it, it was fun the last time I tried it.

There are some real Wonderswan bargains out there, I saw a WS with Gunpey for less than 30 on ebay.

Also, got Resident Evil: Revelations today, 40 in Smyths.
    It's amazing looking!
Really, the first game to really show what the 3DS is capable of, and maybe, just maybe this Ninty has a chance of keeping us amused for the next 5 years.

Decent title, but IMHO terrible controls!
Game pissed me off to no end.
