Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey all you HE heads,

Looking for some advice/recommendations from a wider range of smrt people :)

So, what I have is an panny plasma (42thpz8), xbox360 & a pioneer dcs-370 AIO home cinema dvd kit.

What I'm in the market for is an amp that will let me connect the pioneer dvd & speakers to it along with the xbox so I can use the 5.1 speakers with the xbox.

Part of the reason I want to keep the pioneer speakers is that I like the tallboy style and there is a huge amount of speaker cable with them.

Anyway, I had the yamaha av-4103 - http://min.ie/2aM - recommended to me already and while the smaller speakers work better in my room; I'm kinda set on keeping the pioneers.

The pioneer set is just 60w/speaker - it's ill-advised to get a 100w amp in this case?

Bottom line I want to get 5.1 from my xbox using what I have (if I can) - the more HDMI in ports on the amp the better for future additions.

Oh, I'm assuming that the hdmi cable from xbox to amp will let me use 5.1?

It all sounds terribly n00bish but I know computers, not necessarily HE!

So can you wise folk help a brother out?! :)

I'm thinking this yamaha amp package from pixmania - the optical cable & spare hdmi are handy to have.

But going back to the specs of my current system
    Surround RMS Front	60 W/Channel (1 kHz, 10% T.H.D., 4 Ω)
    Surround RMS Surround	60 W/Channel (1 kHz, 10% T.H.D., 4 Ω)
    Surround RMS Centre	60 W/Channel (1 kHz, 10% T.H.D., 4 Ω)
    Surround RMS Subwoofer	60 W/Channel (100Hz, 10% T.H.D., 4 Ω)

    vs the yamaha amp
    Effective power (in Watts) 5 x 105 W

Is it a simple case of not turning the volume up too much?

Those distortion figures are attrocious and indicate complete misrepresentation of the product, IMO. It is more usual for manufacturers to quote the power output where the distortion is inaudible. I am only guessing, but the power level where the distortion was something like 0.1% might be more like 10-15W, which would be a more honest rating.

    Yes, pretty much

The corresponding specifications for the Yamaha you are looking at are much more respectable:

    Frequency Response (AV5, Front Ch) 10 Hz–100 kHz +0, -3 dB Total Harmonic Distortion (AV5) 8 ohms,1 kHz, 0.9 % THD

Definitely get the Yamaha from a sound quality point of view, no idea whether it will do the Xbox connectivity you want.

Given the amp is no great shakes, I think the chances Pioneer paired excellent speakers with such an amp as pretty slim. At some point I really would suggest that you at least have a listen to some alternative speakers made by companies that specialise in making speakers.

    Hi cnocbui,

    Cheers for the reply.

I don't 'have' to keep the pioneer speaker kit if I can get an decent amp/speaker set.

    I've been looking mostly at pixmania;

For the xbox sound, from my reading all I need is an optical cable from the xbox to amp.

Have you any suggestions as to sites where I can pick up a good amp/speakers?

    [edit]

this onkyo 507 seems to be pretty solid from a quick search on avforums

My HE equip is on the backburner - work stuff has popped up suddenly. thanks for the reply cnocbui
