    Howdy all,

I just stumbled across this thread while doing a bit of research. I work for Quayside Cinema in Balbriggan (formerly New Savoy) and I just wanted to let people know that we have started doing classic movies from this week on and will be showing classics every day for the forseeable future as we had a screen that wasn't in use due to a broken projector.

This week we're showing E.T., The Goonies, Monsters Inc. & Dirty Dancing and we've yet to decide on next week's round of movies. We've posted an open poll on our Facebook page asking our customers what they want to see and we're trying to get as much feedback as possible from anyone who's interested. We're also considering doing movie seasons (comedy, action, actor specific, etc) and/or film clubs...we're open to suggestion!

Before a mod deletes my post, I just want to say that this is not an attempt at free advertising, I'm only posting as people on this thread seem genuinely interested in going to see classic movies and I just wanted to help out by providing some information for those situated in or around North County Dublin.

Anyway, this might be of some help to anyone interested and hopefully this thread continues as there is a severe shortage of classic screenings in Dublin at the moment!

30 seconds walk from the main st and 2 min walk from the train station. Use this cinema myself and its possibly the cleanest cinema ever. Cant wait to see a few classics :D

    Thanks for the replies folks!

Next weeks listings have been confirmed so we'll be showing Bee Movie (Kids Club), Back to the Future and Ghost next week. Times and booking info can be found here.

Like I said before, if you live in or around the Balbriggan area and you think there's a certain movie that a lot of people would want to go see then just let us know and we'll do our best to put it on.

We're also open to talking with anyone who might be interested in running a film club on a regular basis or would like to show a private screening, etc.

    Thanks again!

    Craig

    HoopD_poster_highres

On Saturday 6th August, I am putting on a free screening of a 1994 documentary film called Hoop Dreams. It will be screened at Exchange Dublin, Exchange St. Upper, Temple Bar at 7pm. http://exchangedublin.ie/about
I decided to put on this particular film because I think it is the best documentary film I have seen and not many people I know have seen it.

The film came about in the late 80's when a group of film makers went to an inner city basketball court in Chicago with the intention of making a half hour television programme about the kids playing the courts. Soon the camera crew realised that they had the potential of the makings of a documentary film by following the lives of two particular young basketball prodigies, William Gates and Arthur Agee. What resulted from that decision 6 years later, was 250 hours of film footage which was then edited down an almost 3 hour long documentary film which has won numerous awards and is widely considered one of the best documentary films ever made.

What makes it so good, like any good fictional film, is that all the elements have come together perfectly to produce something that is much greater than its parts. The most important element is the story. It is not just a story of two teenage boys battling against all the odds to reach their dreams, but a story about wider issues such as the sports industry, school system, family, race, and class. It also helps immensely that the characters are very likable and as the story unfolds, we the audience go through the ups and downs with them.

But what makes this documentary more powerful than if it were a fiction story is that the ending could go any way. There is no hand-of-Hollywood to manipulate the plot for maximum emotional impact. No, we get gritty, messy real life and all we can do is let go, relax and let the story lead us where it may.

    Another review: http://www.reelviews.net/movies/h/hoop.html

    All welcome :)

Never been to any of the screen double bills. Is there a leg stretching break between the two movies?

    MOTHER****ING DIE HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s Christmas time in L.A., and there’s an employee party in progress on the 30th floor of the Nakatomi Corporation building. The revelry comes to a violent end when the partygoers are taken hostage by a group of terrorists headed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who plan to steal the 600 million dollars locked in Nakatomi’s high-tech safe. In truth, Gruber and his henchmen are only pretending to be politically motivated to throw the authorities off track; also in truth, Gruber has no intention of allowing anyone to get out of the building alive. Meanwhile, New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) has come to L.A. to visit his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), who happens to be one of the hostages. Disregarding the orders of the authorities surrounding the building, McClane, who fears nothing (except heights), takes on the villains, armed with one handgun and plenty of chutzpah.

I'd assume they'd have some sort of break to allow people have a cig, stretch the ole legs or use the toilets.
I'm looking forward to part 1 more than 2 though..... The OOHZI NAINE MILLIMETARRGH.:D

And Bee movie. Went up for Monsters inc this morning with the young lad. Very enjoyable. It only a small screen, 60-70 seats, but I like that. Picture and sound were very good IMO.

Yeah I've been there for double bills and there is usually a 15 or 20 min break between movies.

As excited as I am for Terminator and Fúck yeah on the Die Hard... it was 1996 when Starship Troopers came out and I cant wait to see it on the big screen again!

Haven't seen Starship Troopers in years, looking forward to seeing it on the big screen now. Will probably catch Rambo: First Blood on the 12th of September there too.
