Seen a thread on boards somewhere about there being a countdown to some unknown event on the rte website iirc..could be linked to that

    From today's Irish Times:
The company has announced plans to offer 100 megabyte internet speeds before Christmas.

Nice, they've gone and switched to megabytes/s, multiplying speeds by 8!

So you could be getting over 3 times the speed with a little tweaking but you cant be arsed..im sorry but i find that hard to believe

I really don't care what you find hard to believe.

you'd think UPC would be making a point of trying to get one of their 100mbps test users actually 'testing' their connection.

This exactly. I rang again last week after replying on this thread and eventually got through to someone who knew the story. He said it's something got to do with downlines or downstreams or something like that. Said there was only one at the minute in my area and the 100mb needs 4. So I cant get it yet.

Pisses me off though that I was talking to them on the phones numerous times and they made it out as though everything should be working fine. They blamed everything on this TCP optimiser crap but at the same time they wouldn't go all out and reccomend changing the settings as it changes the registry???? - cant remember exactly what they said but they wouldn't give detailed instructions on how to fix it. Either they taking the piss completely or they haven't got a clue.

from his post i doubt he'd need the viarga, i reckon having a 100mbps link would do that on it's own. :D

its probably worth mentioning again though that (going by the other UPC territories), the people currently on the regular 40+ quid a month package will likely be bumped to 50-60mbps (5mbps up) with the 100mbps (10mbps up) reserved for anyone willing to pay a premium or those users already on the 80+ quid a month (unadvertised) extreme package that UPC put you on for breaking the 250gb AUP.

that would be cool, i would´nt pay 80 eur/month but if they increase the 30mbit to whatever 50 or sth is fin for me if the upload increases as well. uploading with 350kb is ok but could be faster :D

there's no guarantees, but going by what has happened in other UPC territories with the 100-120mbps upgrades it seems very likely that it's what will happen.

Really hope they released this soon, will be great to actually see 100mb in actions. The taught of downloading a few 1gb in less then 2 minutes is going to be cool, Although the upload is what i'm looking forward to the most.

    hi
i just had a talk to 2 ntl guys working in front of my house, the said the 100mb will be available if the network is fully able to support these speeds, he also said they have indeed 4 downstreams but have them not on at the moment, this explains why the "tester" got only the old 30mbit.

he also said he saw it working in the headquarter and it was good,

they don´t guarantee 100mbit, it´s all like you can get upto 100 it´s the same like 30 now, in some areas it´s just not possible to get full speed.

oh and by date sth early next year or end of this year, probably most like next year i guess.

I was on the phone to them earlier talking to someone about this and he said that it would be around January when its launched, This actually sounds right, As i was told this about 2 months ago by a different guy at upc, So its starting to look like it will be exactly one year after 30mb was introduced!!

    Should be fun!!

    @alofthedunnes

    i had a 30mb line installed from UPC 2 weeks ago ....
On speedtest i was getting 30mb, but my downloads varied in speed from 15mb to 24mb... but mostly in the lower 16mb in speed, iam downloading from newsgroups so i knew that i should be getting top speed....
This was happening on 2 PCs in the house, it wasn't till i connected a Laptop
and got the full 30mb that i realised that it was indeed a TCP setting issue...
I resolved this problem by running TUNE UP utilities and let it sync my internet settings.. i now get full 30mb+ on all PCs all the time....worth trying!

Thanks but have tried connecting a laptop to the modem and still doesn't get above 25-30mb. The lad I eventually was talking to has said that the 100mb is not available because there's not 4 downstreams yet. Fingers crossed they get it upgraded asap.

  • Registered Users Posts: 465 ✭✭cramp

The laptop that i connected was just an indicator to me that there was no fault in line or connection.....
it was tune up utilities that i ran on both Pcs that fixed my TCP issues
i think tune up was previously ran on the laptop cos it was my m8ts laptop and he suggested tune up.....

Are u getting 30mb on speedtest?

If not then you are most likely correct in saying there is a issue with your line!

I could be wrong in saying this but someone was telling me that you can only get the 100Mb if you have fibre directly to your home?? Did the guy mention anything about this??

That is a lie, the cable UPC use is easily capable of 100Mb!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS#Speed_tables

    UPC use EuroDOCSIS.

Sweet, thanks for clearing that up for me mate!! I'm still stuck with Eircom until March then i'm getting rid of them and moving to UPC. Can't wait

I'm getting somewhere between 25 - 30mb on magnet and a few other speed testers. Never higher. This is both on wireless on a mac and wireless and directly connected on a windows vista laptop.

No didn't mention anything about that. Just said that need more downstreams. I've no idea what that means but he said he hoped it would be sorted in next few weeks.

I've a pain in the ass with the new modem aswell. My old pc with a buffalo wireless adaptor cant connect to the network any more. I've rang upc and they saying there's compatibility issues because it's a five year old pc.

Modem also keeps kicking my xbox off the network at random times while I'm streaming stuff. Could be after 5 minutes, could be after 2 hours. Have read somewhere that I need to set up a static ip address for the xbox but not got around to doing it yet.

    Bullsh1t.

??? They have no answer. You shed any light on the problem?

Modem is a Thomson integrated voip modem and wireless gateway. Wireless adaptor on pc running windows xp is a Buffalo.

the only thing that *could* be related to the age of the wireless card in the PC is the use of newer encryption like WPA2 that might not be compatible with older wireless cards.

it's unlikely however, BUT fixing that is as simple as changing the encryption to something older and more compatible.

first try WPA instead of WPA2 (assuming that's whats in use) on your router and failing that try WEP which is older again. it's slightly less secure, but if it works then that might be your problem.

personally, it's more likely (and the first thing to try) that you're on a busy wifi channel that your particular card just can't connect to. you'd expect that if one device can connect then anything should, but it's not always the case. it happens quite a lot though, but its usually very easy to fix by just changing the wifi channel.

download inSSIDer onto your windows laptop and check for other wireless networks in range of you by going to the front & back windows of your house with it running.

you'll see a list of wifi devices in range and a little graph showing you the channels it's using and which ones overlap each other. look for a clear channel with minimal overlaps from other used channels and try that.

and keep a network cable handy in case it doesn't work and you need to get on via cable if you can't get on the wireless after changing it so you can try another channel afterwards. keep trying till you find one that works for everything.

    good luck! :)

It's this exactly with the encryption. My buffalo asks for WPA encryption key but the password I got for the Thomson modem is WPA2 (says it on the sticker).

This is a nightmare for the likes of me. I know a small bit about computers and networks but this is painfull. If I want to fix it I'll have to google loads of stuff and spend hours to get it sorted. Why cant they make it easy. And just imagine what people who haven't got a clue have to go through.

So now I have to change my modems encryption to WPA, set up a static IP address on my Xbox360 and wander around my house looking for channels. Some things never change. Remember rabbit ears and coat hangers??? :D

    Thanks though vibe.

    When I get a minute I'll have a crack.

it shouldn't take too long to do either tbh, inSSIDer is very straightforward to use and works as soon as its installed, there's no need for configuration in it or anything and the results are clearly displayed.

when you change the channel and/or level of encryption it's possible that some devices may need manually reconnecting, but again it's just a couple of minutes per device so it's not a huge job.

also, another option to look at is that there may be a possibility that buffalo released an updated firmware for your wifi card/dongle that enables support for wpa2 which might be an easier option, but don't hold your breath as there's no guarantee it's even possible. i know of routers can be firmware upgraded to support newer encryption but i'm not 100% sure if the same holds true for wifi cards/dongles or not.

it might be worth a look for updated firmware for your specific model though, just on the off chance.

there is more to it than the encryption...check if the devices are being capable of running WiFi A,B ,G standards as some of the older one are not able to run multiple standards...

Just wanted to post a quick apology to ronkmonster and to the other ppl i didn't believe that the 80€/30Extreme package is real... аnd it burnssss my wallet :D

sorry, but no there isn't more to it at all.

802.11a (using 3.7 or 5Ghz) isn't commonly used at all in Europe and as such is not normally supported on any devices you can buy here.

the vast majority of wireless devices bought in the last 10 years will support both 802.11b & 802.11g at 2.4Ghz. some newer devices released in the last couple of years will also support 802.11n (at 2.4 and/or 5Ghz) and the newer standards are backwards compatible on the 2.4Ghz range so any router supporting 802.11n should also allow any b/g/n device to connect to it although the overall speed of your wireless network may well suffer as a result.
