We are both mid 30's..and would know Cork reasonably well For pubs etc..Could you guys recommend a really nice/fancy/upmarket/fine dining/lively restaurant for Anniversary Dinner... Money no object ..well kinda! Thanks in advance

    Cork isn't awash with great restaurants but, the two I would go for something special are:

    Jacque's. Pheonix St. around the corner from the GPO
    http://www.jacquesrestaurant.ie

    and

    Les Gourmandises on Cook St.
    http://www.lesgourmandises.ie

    Both are excellent and probably the best in Cork but thats just my opinion! The Ivory Tower is good too but, i think the dining room leaves a lot to be desired and is a bit too off the wall for a special occasion.

    I agree with both these choices.

    I have been to Jacobs on the Mall a few times and have had both very good and very bad meals.

    Nice: Star Anise, Market Lane;
    Fancy: Jacobs, Jacques, Flemings, Hayfield;
    Upmarket: Flemings, Jacobs, Jacques, Flemings;
    Fine dining: Les Gourmandises, Ivory Tower, Cafe Paradiso
    Lively: Isaacs, Silk Purse, Market Lane.

    There is no one place I could wholeheartedly recommend off hand - used to be Star Anise but I don't think its what is used to be. Isaacs still has the buzziest dining room but the food ain't all that. Jacobs has a lovely room and nice food but can be hit and miss. Ivory Tower could go one of two ways on the night…

    It really depends on what kinda food you like - I hear the Boardwalk does an awesome steak if that's what you are into.

    I've always enjoyed The Barn restaurant in glanmire.
    About €12 in a taxi well worth it imo.

    Market Lane have lovely fish dishes, it's not upmarket or fancy but its a great spot, couldn't fault it really. Loads of staff there too, all very pleasant.

    +1 for The Barn, it is very very nice. Should only take about 10 mins to get there.

    Also, I've never been myself, but the Boardwalk is meant to be nice. And it's only about a 10 second walk from the Clarion.

    Jacobs was not good the last time I was there. Service in Greens can be a bit hit and miss I have found. Isaacs is cheap and cheerful and usually nice very buzzy as well. Cafe Paradiso is Irelands best vegetarian restaurant - worth a try if you are adventurous. While the Ivory Towers is a Cork institution and the food is very good it may take 3 hours to have your meal so beware you will drink a lot of wine and be there all night. Never been to Les Gourmandises but it has a good name. Funnily enough it got a poor write up from Tom Doorley recently. I have heard the boardwalk is good for steak and chips and fish.
