Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Since I have been unable to discuss one individual I think maybe we can discuss many.

Ok so as with the first one I already tried discussing Dodgy helped me progress in many way, the first was was going along to a night shoot of gorrilla lighting which was great fun. His ongoing support and help has helped me get to where I am now.

Paulw first came on the scene when we did a shoot together in a studio after his invitation. We talk online almost everyday, I am not of a technical mind and his wide technical capabilities have helped me out on numerous occasions including our shoot that we both did with Fergus last week and looking forward to the next one this week.

Hmmm, how do I say this.... Fajitas:eek: I'm scared of him, he knocks me down in a way that I take offence to a lot of the time but in this way he pushes me to try and better my work, just so I can say ha but still it does help, I know we love to hate each other really.

There are many many more and I think it would be nice to give each other a pat and the back and say thanks you helped me.

in defense of the above, gorilla lighting was mentioned and I sought clarification.

Biggest influence on me here is xshayx. I'm constantly fascinated by his work, the quality of photographs he produces are amazing. Especially his fisheye and night photography. And he's given me countless tid bits of advice on several areas of photography. All of which I've listened to, because he's always bloody right! :D

Well I'm very new to posting here (long time reader) but I would like to take a minute and thank the majority of people here who are regular contributors. You have helped me learn some new techniques and your work continues to inspire & delight me on a daily basis. I'm even starting to feel a little bit more confident in showing some of my work.

So big Thanks for helping me out of my shell so to speak.

Dragan, where ever he is at these days always posted images which fascinated me. He was good for help and tips when I was hassling him as well! Same goes for Al.

Can't get rid of you at this stage. LOL.

I think, there are 4 people who've had a large impact on my photography on boards.

CityExile - really got me in to sports, and gave harsh C&C which still helps me.
Borderfox - got me interested in the horse show photography. I still have so much to learn.
Leinsterman - Gear porn. I'll say no more. He's like me - more money than sense at times. LOL.

Valentia - WOW, always a big wow. I've known Danny before boards (online) and was always a massive fan of his photography. I always look at his photos and say I'd love to do something like that, knowing full well that I could live 2 lifetimes and not even come close to his standard.

Boards has been such a massive influence on my photography, and I still consider myself just a beginner, especially when compared to the wealth of photography skill on here.

+100 to Covey's answer. Err, I mean elven. She showed me how to develop film. That's made an immeasurable difference to my photography. And my bank balance.

It's rymus's fault I started posting here in the first place. He was the mod at the time that he was also persuading me to go DSLR in a pub in Cork about 4 years ago.

The one I've learned most from is Al on the processing side I think which was my big lack when I got here. After that, a bunch of people who aren't really around so much lately like Sebzy did a lot to kinda open up the community to me.

Community has changed hugely in that time.

Ah Christ. The lot of you, you kill off my creativity and my desire to take photos. Snuff out that fragile little spark deep down inside of me that says, 'go take great photos.' I come here and I feel dead. Photographically dead. Inside.

The only person I knew before I started posting here was Valentia and I've always admired his work. In fact I have an original of his framed on my wall (ok, it's only my two kids as nippers, but it's still an original).

Since then I've been in awe of some of Humberklog's film stuff - it's just amazing. (I have an original of his too)

Morisseeee's landscapes are also amazing as are Osheads portraits.

I'm not big fan of sports or gigs so I tend to pass over them although AR's gig shots are always worth a look.

As a newbie to photography I haven't really settled into a style yet, nor have I decided which type of photography I like best. It's great to browse the random thread just to see what tickles other peoples fancy. It's even better to browse someones Pix.ie or flickr and see what else they shoot. There are some really talented amateurs and enthusiasts floating around here and I'm learning something from them all.

    lovely to see.

One of the best ways to learn, or gain influence, in photography is simply by looking at other photographs.
In that way this forum has helped me a lot over the years despite all its politics and cliques.

there are a couple of photographers who i really rate on here, and there are a few photographers who i think are excellent in their field as proffesionals, or as keen amateurs.
    However names are irrelevant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,198 ✭✭✭kensutz

I think the thing to do is ask people for advice no matter how stupid it may sound. We've been through the whole process in one way or another.

It's easy to point to all the inspirational work and ideas and insights as being overwhelmingly on the plus side.

On the other hand we can never know what might have been in an alternate reality where we never used boards, eg would more people have joined camera clubs and how might that compare?

That aside, while us older heads are well used to the cut and thrust of life and can deftly ignore keyboard warriors who think they're the Gordon Ramsey of photography (and leave them to learn the hard way in meatspace), it's good to remember that newcomers particularly the young need encouragement.

Oh Fenster, youve been around here long enough to have an inkling of who i am talking about.
However the recent trend of this forum has been all about ego's and to be frank i cant be arsed with it.

I just want to see good images, from all styles and philosophies. To give advice where i can, and to take advice when given
Thats what this forum should be about, leave the communal back patting to drunken nights in the pub.

I find this thread slightly uncomfortable to be honest. I think (hope) that the many people here that have inspired me know that already. (If not it's my fault)

I have yet to submit a photo for C&C because I'm afraid of the truth of my expertise. You lot are not the usual 'yes men' I usually like to surround myself with:D
But that being said if someone from here compliments my work it makes it all the more valuable to me.

That's one thing about this place - such a mix of people, talents, experience, photographic skill and also personal tastes.

99.9% of the time, C&C here is based on honest opinion from the members. There will always be times when someone doesn't like your photos. That's only natural. But, more importantly people do give reason as to what/why they like or dislike your image.

I've learned a lot from posting images here and getting constructive comments.

So, don't be shy, give it a try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

This place has been a wonderful help in allowing me to nuture this hobby of mine. And I get inspiration from lots of different peoples submissions and advice here.

The people who have wowed me the most would be Valentia, Fajitas!, Sezby (who hasn't been around much) and thebaz but in reality I open up threads on here on a regular basis and am quite taken aback by the quality of the captures.

Thanks for all the great piccies :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,164 ✭✭✭nilhg

Like all the others who've posted here I've learned a lot form the kind folks on here, and there are many on here who's work I really admire (too many to individually mention) but if I had to pick one who I would say inspired me it would have to be Noah Grey (greysoul on here).
I only met him once, he arrived to the first Charleville Castle meet with SineadW and Elven and I don't believe I heard him speak 10 words all day but seeing his pictures and reading his report on the day was eyeopening.
He hasn't posted here in quite a while, so I hope he's OK and will feel able to put his site up again soon.

For Street Photography it was Barry.
For Gig {Photography no one but myself although only other gig photographer who I find comparable is Shay. Same type of music(ish) so that could be a
    factor.

Photographer who has the most interesting stuff at the moment is Humberklog.
Best personal advice and constructive C&C from Pete and Fajitas.

well thank you (blush) but I am one of those photographers that real photographers hate. No photography experience, got entry level dslr and photoshop to patch up my photography errors. 2 years on it's changed slightly but I still feel like a fraud on a photography forum.

Anyway back to the original topic I love these boards because there's such a varity of types photography experience. I mainly shoot families but if I ever shoot anything else I come on here to find how others do it well and copy them. :)
