Well they would have the date of registration from the V5 document at the worst plus Im sure they could get details from the NI/UK Department of Environment equivalent to see when the last owner sold it. If they really wanted to they would find out no problem I guess.

In my experience its just better off getting it done, always will be people who get away with cos thats just life...

Back in the eighties, fishtits was seconded to customs for a week from another Gov agency. I was on the road with the plain clothes guys, they had scary powers back then and they were very much a can do so get it done type of outfit, none of the bureaucracy that hampered other branches.

Having said that, this particular case sounds iffy TBH.

PS Bond, if they've scoped the car outside a house for several days/weeks the invoice date is irrelevant.

Why not pay the VRT like you should have already done...
Then sit back and see what happens...

You can bet that this is not a scam, and that the stop is on file already. The OP will not get away with just paying the VRT now.

I don't feel hard done by at all. I know I should have re-registered it and was fully aware of the consequences. Knew that I would have to pay the VRT eventually. Just was curious about the manner in which I have to pay the fine.

So I rang the customs office today, they told me that yes payment of the fine is indeed paid to "the mobile unit".

I for one think this is wrong. I really don't think it's right to hand money over to a person at the side of the road. I think there should be an office you can send a payment into. But seemingly it doesn't work that way.

I'd say pay the VRT and then see what happens. Someone might come back to you saying that you have a fine to pay, or they might not. Asking to be met in a car park doesn't sound right at all. Sounds like a scam or a corrupt officer. If someone does come back to you about the fine, you can say that you were waiting for something to arrive through the post.

he gave me his mobile phone number and told me to call him next week when I have the money together.

but he said he could meet me in a car park and I could pay the fine.

    Is this normal?

    edit: grow up!

I would simply refuse to pay cash over to the officer in the car park. If its on file in the office, surely they can take payment there. If its not on file, well what to say that the guy isnt pocketing the funds and frightening you into paying the vrt at the same time?
If they cannot take the money in office, ask why not and if you have to pay cash to the guy, take him to garda station to do it and get a witnessed receipt.

How much is the fine as a matter of interest. If you can't afford it probably best to sell the car?

cant really afford to pay both though. altogether the fine and the vrt will cost me 7000 euros. Not easy to come up with in november. might just pay the fine and try and sell the car.
I know if I pay the VRT now and ignore the fine he will come looking for me and ill end up paying both.

Would you not still have to pay the VRT and fine, before you can sell the car?

You knew you'd have to pay VRT when you bought the car in the first place, so time to cough up.

Why do people import cars and not bother paying VRT...you know you're gonna get caught asap..and then import cars they can't afford to pay the VRT on?

my brother was the very same...stupid muppet imported a car from england and thought he wouldn't have to pay VRT on it due to some scam even though I had already warned him it wouldn't work.

You won't be able to sell in the Republic if the VRT is not paid.

really are you sure, could I not sell it less the price of the vrt.
for example if they are selling for 15000 here in the south I could sell it for 10000 and they could pay the vrt. (or not):D

Ok before I start I know all the laws and know I should have paid my VRT from the start but I didnt and now Im paying for it.

What I am wondering about is when the customs officer stopped me and told me I would have to pay the fine he gave me his mobile phone number and told me to call him next week when I have the money together.

Now its on an official piece of paper with a stamp and everything, but he said he could meet me in a car park and I could pay the fine.

    Is this normal?

    Is this a wind-up?

Nothing too exciting. A toyota corrolla verso.
Your not from the customs are you??

    Nope, you're ok :)

I was just curious of the car to get an idea of the fine calculation. I'd heard various things from it being 10% of the cars omsp, to it being 10% of VRT owed.

    Best of luck with everything

The new owner would have a very tough time registering the car.

You have to pay the VRT before you sell it on. No way around that.

Of course, if you don't pay the fine and VRT, customs may just sieze your car and impound it.

This could bring you a whole new set of problems. You have to be authorised by Revenue to trade in foreign registered vehicles and as such you have to have your garage (or where ever you are selling the cars from) authorised too. If you are found selling it on UK/NI plates there will be more to deal with.

The VRT is something you cant get out of but Im sure you could negotiate the fine. They should be happy with just slapping you on the wrist with some sort of a fine so that might be an easier option for you to negotiate on.

As for the car park payment of the fine, as I said before, perfectly normal, just get a receipt from them.

No easy way out for you Im afraid....

Not so, btdt, loads of times. Including buying non-Irish reg and reg'-ing in my name, as well as selling, and reg'ing in new owners name. Revenue don't care who pays the money, so long as it's paid.

You don't seem to realise that the Customs guy effectively did the OP a favour - he could have seized the car there and then when he couldn't pay the fine on the spot.

How long ago? You may have been lucky. They are always trying to identify non-registered traders, afaik.
