I need a GPU would like to get a card to play some games at 720p on my tv or on a 22" monitor

Not sure what card is best to get no point in getting a really good card and the rest of the system stopping me from getting the use out of it

The rest of the parts i have are

    2.8 dual core socket 939 {was going to overclock it}

    4 gig ram ddr1

    620 watt power supply

I no its old stuff but surely i can do something with it

    Thanks

What's the exact model of psu you have?

What's the res of you 22" screen?

Your pc really isn't bad at all. A 2.8ghz dual proc should be capable of playing pretty much every game going!

This thread should prove useful to you :)

The suggested card in this case is the 4850 which is a decent option to you, you could go a tad lower, it depends on what you want to play - I wouldnt think going much higher will be of any real benefit.

Depends on what the res of his 22" screen is

All depending on your price range

Ive heard good things about the ATi radeon 4850HD 1GB model altjo they do cost a good bit

If not try out averts.ie (connection to boards) theres always good priced cards on there and almost all users are willing to come down on asking price, so you could pick up a decent nvidia or ATi card for next to nothing that can run crysis on high everything

altho you will need to reserch on you motherboard, and PSU before buying any cards

    hope this helps :)

    Your psu is... unfortunate :D

It should be able to handle this fine though and it'll happily play your games at that res!
    The 4770

    Under €85 delivered,

I don't know much about older pc's, but i'm supposing your motherboard has a pci express slot?
I'm pretty sure it will though

if you where to get a new fan for this card you could be grand for high-very high at ur resi in most games and its dead cheap http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=434121
i plan on building a PC and getting that card to start out and then change to a more powerfull card

I don't mind splashing out a bit if the card will last me longer and if i start playing games at a higher res :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 289 ✭✭swirlser

Well you dont wanna spend too much either :) Your machine is ageing so you must be realistic in terms of what to expect and just how much longer it will last, even with a new gpu.

If you have much more money than the suggested above cards, maybe consider a new build/more substantial upgrade?

If your happy enough for the moment and believe a new gpu will give u enough longevity to justify the upgrade, then to help you pick a gpu, Id suggest you google reviews for um "HD 4___ review", check out how it does with games @1024* res. (It will also show you nV's appropriate offering, which may be appealing to you - but there isnt much between um)

    That's a bad idea!!!
Get a new fan for the card? What are you talking about? This card will not play games(well), it's a htpc/non-gaming card...

Also nightrider there is very little difference in performance between the 4850 and the 4770, but there is a significant power requirement difference. I went for the 4770 for you because of the power supply you have(which is crap).

It's the best option for your pc. Your pc will be a capable gaming machine once again with the 4770

My friend has this card and i dont mean a fan for the card i
mean the case. The card ran crysis on med on most things with max res on my screen ,1300x800 or something i donno, fact is this card is good for its price seen as its only 20 euro

i also recommended the 4850HD as its a good enough card. I also liked the BFG my friend used but im not sure what make model it was

Didn't no it was so cheap and the game that comes with it looks good going to lower my offer and see if he takes it as the game bring's it up to the same amount new

Is it a good card and will it play today's games and games for an other while

    Thanks

Cant vouch for the brand, as Ive never used them. But I have the 4870 in one of my side rigs and it plays various FPS shooters very well at middle res's (1680*1050) - in most cases all settings @highest.

What is the difference between the different brands do they not all do the same thing ?

Just thought they all run as fast as each other one might have better cooling or something
