The Garda website now has a list of Post Office's that are live and able to process licences.

They were unsure of the process.

You are simply paying for it - you still need to send your grant letter, with payment receipt attached, in the envelope provided, to kilrush.

No - it was in the instructions the nice lady behind the counter had. She was to give me back my letter and receipt of payment.

I Paid and got her to make me a copy of the letter and the reciept and give me a certificate of postage.

I pocketed by copies and cert, put the original letter and a stapled reciept into the pre-paid envelope and gave it back ot her to send for me.

All done.

Wait one week

Carry on as before.

I got my grant letter before the Post Offices came on stream and had to post the letter to Ennis. Process was quick enough, but a bit of a security nightmare as the grant letter with my address and firearm details had to be enclosed. Now you're telling me that the local Post Offices are taking in the letters and posting them to Kilrush!
I had assumed that when the system went fully live the PO would scan the barcode and the payment process would be automated - like paying your ESB bill or whatever.:rolleyes:
The only "added value" would seem to be that the PO will take cash..... maybe in the fullness of time we will get a payment slip with just a barcode, without the personal info....maybe

I rang the garda firearms licensing helpline this morning on 1890 333 555
and was told the following.

if you pay at the post office then you DO NOT have to send the grant letters to Ennis as the system is automated.
you will be given a reciept which you should keep along with your grant letter.

only send the letter in the pre paid envelope if you are paying by cheque or credit/laser card etc.

I doubt it's deliberate though Bond - I was the first one the guy at the GPO had seen doing his firearms licences there, and he wasn't 100% sure of the procedure himself. If the GPO isn't fully up to speed...

probably, this is the first time post offices had to deal with it so maybe thats why.

the whole thing has been confusing from the start, the new laws,guidelines,restricted list etc.

Well, yeah basicly. That's precisely what I did and my licences arrived this morning in the post, meaning they were processed on Monday and posted either that day or on Tuesday (more likely to have been posted on Monday actually). Which means that either An Post posted off the form for me without telling me, or the computers are all hooked up - either way, same end result.

i popped down to the post office in dundrum (d.14) and handed the letter into the girl serving , she simply scanned the barcode and asked me for the €80 , she then took the receipt and stapled it to the letter and handed it back to me , i asked do i send away the letter and receipt and she said no keep the letter and receipt and you'll get the licence in the post , very efficient and they appeared well up to speed on the whole thing.:)

That sounds like the quickest way to get your licence. Posting the letter to Ennis and waiting for the post back is obviously going to take longer.

mmmmm I beg to differ on this one - I did the same - paid in the PO - got my receipts - copied them and stuck them in the post to Kilrush on Wed morning.
Just now - a "Rejected Payment Notice" for each of them has come in the letter box with my grant letters and receipts attached.

"Your payment in respect of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX received on XXXXXXXXXXX could not be processed by An Post because:

o Payment has already been made in respect of this FC.

For any queries relating to this notice, please contact the Garda LoCall tel no 1890 XXX XXX."

So that's it in a nutshell - pay in PO and hang on to your grant letters and receipts.

And in saying all that - No licences arrived with them :mad:

Had much the same experience today. Went to Post Office with grant letter (one only so far) and paid at the counter. When the lady scanned the barcode she started reading my details off the screen and comparing them with the letter: Name and address only, but I was wondering what else was there.

She was intent on keeping the grant letter, but mindful of your advice LB6, I said she didn't need to. After attempting to phone somebody, she eventually found something on her screen that agreed with me and gave it back with the receipt stapled on.

I wasn't giving it up without a fight

A friend applied one working day before me, and got his grant letters one working day before me (for his non-restricted stuff only - so far) and paid in the same way at his post office today, so we're going to see how long it takes for them to come back. I'll post back here when I find out.

they did something right.
