Most depressing/melancholic songs.

Probably been done before, but just listening to "Charlotte" by Hope Sandoval there and even though it's beautiful it is just so sad-sounding.
Just got me thinking.
In your opinion, what are the most depressing/melancholic songs ever?
I'll probably throw in "I know it's over" by The Smiths as well.

There are probably 2 kinds of depressing songs, mind you- those that make you feel better, and those that are really depressing/sad.
Edit: Probably wondering more about the second type.

Johnny Cash - Hurt - is truly a sad song. It might be madly popular but it still hits the mark.

Leonard Cohen will most likely spring up but most of his songs are quite cheery in lots of ways. The exception being the "Death of a Ladies Man" which has huge Phil Spector sound but the most depression of Lenny's songs.

I was going to say 'I Know It's Over' too. Morrissey really is one of the kings of melancholic lyrics. After seeing Control I think 'Atmosphere' by Joy Division is even more depressing. Every time I listen I just get reminded of the films final scenes.

It does make sense that some make you feel better while others make you sad. I find that if I am in a bad way it does greatly help to listen and have a good cry. Sometimes it’s just necessary. There’s too many to list really but these would be firm favourites (feels a bit strange saying ‘favourite’ because I associate them with tough times in my life. Yet I love the songs. To have that power to pull you through. It’s incredible. Music is.).

(Dudess, This Woman’s Work – Kate Bush. Agree with that. I find her song ‘Under the Ivy’ heartbreaking too. I often find Kate at her best when it’s just herself and a piano rather than with guitar, bass and drums. I agree about I Know it’s Over also, tech77)
