LyX: format of refs to figs inconsistent

I have figures in the format 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 etc My cross references to the figures render as 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 2.2.1 etc edit: This only seems to have occurred where the figures appear at that level of depth in the numbering (i.e.: a figure in section 1.1 is fine, but a figure in section 1.1.1 is not) How do I fix that? How do I fix that?
Don't think I have to use one format over the other - but clearly they need to be consistent

edit 2:
according to a the following link, you need the \caption to be before the \label to reference the figure number instead of the section
