    Hi folks,

I'm taking a weekend break with the boyfriend in Athlone and I just wanted to pick your brains!

We'd be looking for a bar to get some good grub in, and most importantly, watch the football!

Would also like to go out somewhere for dinner in the evening. Somewhere you reckon is good value.

Lastly, what are the best bars around? And what would be the best late bars? We will be staying in the Sheraton, so if there's any places close to there worth mentioning it's be most appreciated.

    Thanks for your help!:)

Barfood+Match: I've heard The Prince Bar gets a crowd for ManU/Liverpool games. Bar food was decent enough any time I ate there
Late bar: Coppers ... its just before the town bridge and near enough The Prince
Good value dinner: Top Deck ... just above Coppers, have a deal on at the moment, all main courses (except steak) for €10

Don't go to the prince for a match, there's no atmosphere and they have the sound down fairly low.
For the match go to The Palace, It'd be the best town pub for the match
If you want a great atmosphere for the match go to the tack or the coosan tavern

The Castle Inn is a great spot for the match. You won't get any grub there though but The Palace is just up the street. Agree with previous poster though, stay away from The Prince for the match - no atmosphere, the grub is good in there aswell though.

Late bars depend what you're looking for but theres not a huge choice when it comes to somewhere open past 1 - The Palace can be good but its very young in there, coppers across the bridge is a good spot.

Enjoy Athlone wherever you end up

Thanks for the replies. You've given me a great starting point.

Really looking forward to going now! Looks as if there's plenty of options.

Yeah, deccurley, we're a couple in our mid 20's so thanks for the heads up regarding The Palace. I'll keep an eye open for Coppers.

The Left Bank is a great spot for lunch and then across the road to Sean's Bar for the match!

we dont realise how lucky we are in athlone for good pubs and restaurants. there is alot of choice to be fair when you sit down and think about it.

Agreed. Try any other similarly size town, Athlone beats the pants off them, I think its because of good competition and the fact that the town isn't run by one family like a lot of other towns.

Athlone has a fantastic range of restaurants that are all really good. Not bog standard cafes and chineses but really top quality restaurants! We are lucky alright.

    Hi all,
I'm going to Athlone this Saturday, Sunday, Monday! I was wondering can anyone recommend anywhere that opens late on a Sunday night? or a nice place that does nice food! I've read all of the suggestions here but it was 4years ago and I'm sure times have changed. All responses will be greatly appreciated!

    :)

Don't leave Athlone without having dinner in Thyme Restaurant. It's really good. I'd also check out tripadvisor. Have fun...

All the restaurants are still going strong (the genoa is back too!!!).

The Piano bar seems to be a good spot too. There was some good live bands in there over Christmas.

    I'd recommend the Left Bank.

Ya the Piano Bar is very very very classy . Surprised how big that it is.

Ya, funny enough, always happy enough with our pubs. Most of the good ones on the west or central (downtown Athlone) Ya, many people that I know here is Dublin are complimentary about the restaurants and hotels in Athlone and Glasson area.

Pitty the night clubs are crap, then it would be a right Party Town,(maybe I just hate night clubs)

The Piano Bar is classy alright.... when there's an average crowd in it. But when it's packed, I'm not to mad about it at all! For a packed pub with loud music, I would prefer Coppers but I do like The Piano Bar when there's a nice small crowd in it and you can appreciate its classiness!

The day of nightclubs is over!

They're usually more fun at night though.
