I wonder if they will up the amount of "on screen" time Stannis gets in the tv show, in the books he isn't really in it all that much.

I've heard people talking about Malcolm McDowell for Balon Greyjoy, stick a fuller beard on him and he'd be perfect.

show needs robert carlyle, not sure as who though :p
Have they cast Mance Rayder yet? Cos that's who RC would be perfect for, IMO.

He dosen't actually appear in ACOC iirc though, he just gets a few mentions here and there from both night watch and wildlings. Qhorin Halfhand has to be cast though, I could see RC playing him as well.

Theres a heap of people need to be cast from Qarth as well like Xaro Xhoan Daxos and Strong Belwas, who has to be not only immensly fat but incredibly strong as well.

With all the new characters being introduced next season, I wonder how that will go down with non book readers? All the people on Pyke, all the Stannis people, Brienne, some more black brothers, Roose Bolton, the others involved in the Harrenhall section. I wonder how much different emphasis will be placed on things compared with the book? I read somewhere that they were going to deviate somewhat more than they did in the first book, but it's hard to think what they could leave out unless they change a section of the story altogether.

Thought that after I typed the above! Unless of course he's snuck in an early scene in Winterfell (as if).

Now that would be forward planning.

You really wouldn't put it past Martin to ask for it though, would you?

    I reckon the whole
shadow warrior coming out of Melisandres womb thing
is going get people freaked out if they keep that plotline as it is in the book. I can't wait to see the thread in the TV forum after that episode :D

    Or
    Stannis's shadow killing Renly.

What's the spoiler policy in this thread by the way?

If discussing the 1st season - in any form - no spoiler space required.
If discussing Books 2-4, then state the book you're talking about and use spoiler space.
If discussing Book 5, use the "A Dance With Dragons" thread.

I don't think I said too much, but I certainly won't be annoyed if you feel the need to edit my recent posts in light of your above post ixoy.

That would be amazing. Testament to his acting how he could be half a dozen characters easily! Somebody email them there.
without him SGU would have been so dire.

I've been looking for the books in a bundle but I'm a bit confused. Amazon.com sell books 1-4 for $20. Amazon.co.uk sell books 1-4 in 5 books. Book 3 being in two parts I think. They sell at £29. The amazon.com one had about 100 1-star reviews. Out of 380 reviews thats not good. I dont know if how many of those reviews are based on the kindle version but I seen some about the actual book and they mentioned print missing at the bottom of pages and whatnot. Long story short I'm confused.

Anyone know where I can get books 1-4 for a decent price ?

    Should I buy this ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,266 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

That's the film tie-in version so I can't vouch for the quality of the print, I have the preceding paperback printings and they're fine though.

Book 3 is in two parts in most paperback releases as it's simply too large to be bound as a paperback!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭MungBean

I might stay clear of the mass market prints altogether and spend the extra to buy them individually.

I got them all from bookdepository.co.uk for a fairly reasonable amount and IIRC, there's a discount code for them over in Bargain Alerts at the mo ;)

The savings on bookdepository vs amazon allowed me to slip in the second part to book 3. Many thanks :)

RObert Carlyl would be too small for Halfhand?

For Strong Belwas - Michael Clarke Duncan (Armageddon/ John Coffee the Green Mile)

I wonder will the show influence the books in anyway , I'm thinking in terms of popular characters from the tv show getting their pov count upped , or GRRM reigning in his battlescenes somewhat to something that would realisticly achievable on a tv budget (an issue he has been wrestling with scripting the blackwater episode of season 2).

    ^^ That's a terrible thought. :pac:

But no, I can't imagine he would let his world be limited by budget.

Finally getting to watch these online now, just up to the part where Jaime has Jory and some other northmen killed. I really don't like how Cersei's portrayed at all - it's all wrong? Cersei in the show once loved Robert (not so in the books), once bore him a child that died in infancy (in the books she aborted the one child she had of Robert's?) and just generally isn't feisty enough. Maybe I haven't read far enough in the books yet (only part way through Storm of Swords), but the tv Cersei just seems so off. She's supposed to love Jaime and her kids (let's not forget herself :pac:) and no-one else.

I thought her portrayal was fair enough, althought the bit about having once loved Robert was dodgy, it seemed to make her a bit too sympathetic. My main problem with her portrayal was that I didn't think the actress was good looking enough to portray Cersei who is meant to be one of the most beautiful women of that age.

I think they've generally done a good job of getting people close enough to the looks. They can't get someone who looks exactly like the characters and who can act and who is available to act in the show and who they can afford.

Some people gave out that Ser Gregor Clegane wasn't big enough - Seriously, they wanted the casting director to somehow find someone even taller to act in their show. There are limits to how close they can match physical characteristics (Peter Dinklage should really be uglier for example). All in all they've done better than I could expect with the appearances given the constraints of reality.

I think so too. I mean, Tyrion in the show is handsome enough, but in the books his eyes are different colours and his face malformed. I thought the actors portrayal was more important than their appearance, which for the most part was fairly spot on. Why they couldn't give the Danaerys actress some purple contact lenses though is beyond me :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 Saltfeather

apparently coloured contact lenses aren't the most comfortable or the easiest to see through, for the sake of a tiny detail i'd rather the actors could concentrate on their characters then stumble about on set and be squinting at the camera in every scene:D

that said there are some fab subtle hints e.g getting Maise Williams to fight left handed as Arya is left handed, even though she's right handed. Fair play!

mostly i adore the casting.... Jamie (oh yah) Viserys (yup) and Joffrey (wow you nail creepie turd every time) and then the not so much....Cersei (too nice) Littlefinger (too contrived) but then you can't make everyone happy and they've done an awesome job and so far i approve of the choice of actress for Brienne....roll on season 2

Stannis and Melisandre have been cast! They look like good fits physically anyway

Aye but what will they do when
Tyrion is meant to have half his nose chopped off after the Battle of the Blackwater...if they just have a small scar or something it will be a big copout imo

Being pragmatic they could just cut that out. I can't really see the next few seasons being as faithful to the book as season one was, they would just become unfilmable.

    Specialist make-up maybe? CGI?
Sfx crews have been able to chop the nose off Ralph Fiennes' face for the Harry Potter movies - they can easily manage Tyrion's disfigured face after the battle if they so choose.
I'll be sad if they don't bother adding that in though, because it is something that makes the character more bitter.

Are they? Fair enough. The actress does portray Daenerys excellently so I can't really complain :D

Totally agree with the casting too. I think Tyrion's a bit too happy-go-lucky in the show though, which is a bit annoying, and I already mentioned my gripes with Cersei. Sansa is portrayed perfectly though - that actress really got into Sansa's head and does a brilliant job on screen. I know, because I want to slap her in every scene :pac:
