Under the Control of Dogs Act 1986 if you have a dog over 4 months old, you must have a licence for it. You must be aged over 16 years to get the licence. The dog licence is valid for one year from the date of issue and can be purchased at any post office.

    Dog Licences

In order to obtain a dog licence, you must be over 16 years of age. It is an offence for you to keep a dog over 4 months old unless you have a licence. Your dog must be accompanied by and be under your effective control or the control of another responsible person if it is outside your home or premises or the home or premises of the person in charge of it. You can be requested by a dog warden to produce evidence of your dog licence and failure to do so can result in an on-the-spot fine. Failure to pay this fine within a specified period can result in prosecution by your local authority. Licences are not required for dogs in the possession of the County Council, the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Gardai, blind persons' guide-dogs, and any dog imported into the State for less than 30 days.

Dog licences are issued by your post office. The revenue from dog licences finances the operation of dog control services in local areas throughout the country.

    That should help

heres our new addition,,we got her from a lovely lady in macroom who rescues dogs , we spotted her along with her 5 siblings on irish aminals site. The mother a border collie had made a nest in a ditch and was raising them there when they were discovered at the age of 4 weeks. They were all taken to the rescue centre where they were cared for untill almost 2 weeks ago they were put up for adoption,,needless to say they were not on the site long before they were all adopted and their mother is now going to be spayed and socialised....The only thing we dont know is what the father was ,,we'll have to wait and see,, shes a real sweetie and spends her time sleeping on the couch and running around with the kids

Cute, cute puppy!!! Does she have blue eyes or is it just the photo, if she does I'd keep an eye on her hearing. Predominantly white dogs with blue eyes are at risk of deafness or hearing problems, just something to keep an eye on

a pup / dog, kept by the breeder does not need a licence until it is 4 months of age ( mother dog still has to be present ). HOw ever, if you buy the pup from the breeder, usually at 8 weeks / 2 months you need a licence from day 1, even if the pup is younger than 4 months.

Read that on a council / animal site a few weeks back.

I thought it was illegal to buy licences at the door. A dog warden can ask to see them or give you notice to purchase one but not sell them to you.

A dog warden has no right to ask for money at anytime:( not for fines or licences.

The pup was 7 weeks at the time. We just bought it off him at the door cos we knew we'd forget to get it at the post office!

    did you get a receipt?

The post office is meant to stamp them and they keep a record of it then.

Id be very wary of buying licences from the warden at your door as they are an official document and are supposed to be purchased at the post office.

It's all stamped and the warden kept a copy - it's exactly the same as what you get in the post office.

Dog wardens are not authorised to take money from the public. They can only check to see if you have a licence or give you a form to produce one within 10 days if you haven't, which by the way they get paid commission on.

A lot of dog pounds are not even allowed to sell licences, you have to go to the post office to buy one and then bring it back to the pound when rehoming a dog.

Not saying this happens but there is nothing to stop anyone printing a book of receipts and fraudulently selling them around the doors.

FYI you can also buy them online now from some of the county councils - possibly it's only in Dublin at the moment
