im single and presently pay 13 quid a week for health insurance , for a couple with four kids , the cost is around 50 euro per week , many familys on wellfare spend 50 quid a week on booze , burgers and bookies

Private healthcare isn't a magic bullet at all. Going through private health insurance is like flying with Ryanair, basic hospital care might be covered but the many "extras" (there was a time when anaesthesia came under this category) come out of your own pocket. Most private healthcare providers are engaged in blatant profiteering from what I can see.

If it's not something that needs to be tended to within a week or so, then your best option is to go public imo.

With a little help from the 225k p/a + private practice consultants of course using public facilities to cram their bank accounts to bursting.
