International Volunteer Day (IVD) is a chance for volunteer-involving organizations and individual volunteers to promote their contributions to development at local, national and international levels. By merging UN support with a grassroots mandate, IVD is a unique opportunity for volunteer-involving organizations to work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups and the private sector.
IVD was established by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December.

    Promoting the impact of volunteering
Conduct a "time-donation" campaign by which people pledge hours of voluntary service to specific projects
Build roads, paths, or playgrounds using donated materials and with help from volunteers
Help companies identify corporate volunteering programmes
Launch a national directory of volunteer organizations
Establish a national centre or foundation to promote volunteering
Organize a contest on composing a volunteer anthem, song or jingle
    Create an award or certificate.
Mobilize a high-ranking government official or other VIP to present this to individual volunteers or volunteer organizations
Launch a book, report, or research initiative on voluntary activities in the country
Make a list of all the services which would not exist if it were not for volunteers
Lobby for adoption of legislation designed to promote volunteering
The day can be what the country itself makes of it. There is certainly food for thought for policy makers and participants in the voluntary sector.

pdf -> It's a bit more on the United Nations Volunteers International Volunteer day.
There is a link to this from the worldvolunteerweb.org through which the work done by volunteers on environmental projects can be brought to the attention of the big international climate change conference in Copenhagen. That conference will set the scene for how the international community deals with climate change into the future.

5 December 2009 – Marking International Volunteer Day, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today paid tribute to the key role that volunteers around the world play in protecting the planet, as world leaders prepare to gather at the climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, set to kick off next week.
    ...
“Volunteerism is a source of community strength, resilience, solidarity and social cohesion,” he said, ranking it “among society's most vital assets.”
That last bit is nicely worded.

Volunteering Ireland, through its local service of the Dublin City North Volunteer Centre, marked International Volunteer Day 2009 by holding a photo exhibition launch entitled “Volunteers in Action.” Photographs highlighted the assortment of people volunteering in Dublin and the various ways people can give back to their community. Many of the photos are of volunteers in action; candid photographs of volunteers at work. This fantastic event, supported by Allianz, was held on December 4th in Dublin Castle.
Anyone have a report about other events? There was of course the climate change demonstration. linked from Comhlámh.org
