Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was pipped to the post on an 07 Nissan Primera from Palmerston Motors yesterday. Someone test drove it and bought it literally 2 minutes before I got there. The sales guy (who I found very professional and not at all pushy), said that he would source another one of a similar standard for me.

2 questions, if I may be so bold.

1)Has anyone out there dealt with, or had any experiences good or bad with Palmerston Motors?

2)Is the Nissan Primera 1.6 generally a good car.

My budget is E10,000 (cash), and I am looking for a reliable car, preferrably low mileage, full service history, 1.6, although I would consider 1.8.

    Appreciate your opinions/advice

You can you so much better then a Primera.

    '05 Volvo S40 leather, a/c etc

Admittedly a bit expensive, but it just shows you what you can get instead of a bog standard Primera.

Those Primerias give a savage amount of gearbox problems

    Thanks for the responses.

Snowman - thanks for the link - I'll give them a shout

Aside from that, I'm open to getting something other than a Primera - I was going with it initially because you can get a 2 year old model with pretty low mileage for a good price. I also thought that they had a pretty good level of reliability. Basically I want to get something that should last me 5 years minimum. Not doing high mileage, and I would be a long way from a boy racer.

Kildarelad - are the gear box problems with the Primeras severe enough to warrant knocking them off my list?

The reason their such a good price secondhand is because their really bad.The gearboxes do give alot of trouble and their basically a renault car now with a Nissan badge and renault dont do electrics well

Not entirely true, they have bad boxes alright, but they're not that bad.
They don't sell because of over supply of rental fodder and they're a bit low rent next to a Passat or (dare I say) Avensis.

They have been mentioned here a few times, although I've never had any dealings with them myself:

jethrothe2nd if it were me these few words alone would be enough to steer well clear. My first car was a Renault and it was absolute heartache. A friends mother has a 04 micra, which again I believe has Renault mechanicals and its dogged with problems.

A Mazda 6 or Ford Mondeo would be a wiser purchase than a Primera. They can also be bought for similar money, nicer to drive and generally very reliable. Bonus is that they do not come with a weedy 1.6 litre engine.

Thanks again for all the advice. I can't say that a Primera sounds like such a good buy....! Going to have a look at this on Monday.

As with any second hand car make sure it has a service history, verify this by ringing the garages that serviced the car.

Hada complete rethink about practicality, running costs, etc etc and ended up buying an 07 Skoda Octavia with 23k on it for E10,000. Absolutely lovely car to drive despite it only being a 1.4.

Thanks to all for the help
