Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey,

    Looking at getting a car, I am originally a UK resident, been here for 3+years.
    I have had on/off driving experience, mainly as a named driver (most recently expired dec 2006). Since moving here I have been renting cars through a small company that only charge 50euro for weekend hire (therefore for my usage has been quite cost effective hiring 1-2 times a month).

    Now I have been offered a car for a reasonable price and thinking of getting it. I started to look into insurance, expecting roughtly a few hundred (although knowing it was Ireland expecting maybe 5-600, i.e. a couple more than uk!) but the lowest quote I can get is 1100euro for tpft!
    Note: I have had a full lic for 10+ years, never a point or claim and been driving regularly enough!

    sooo anyone recommend any 'specialist' companies out there? I spoke to XS, and they were still the best part of 1k!

    I am well beyond boy racer age category (well 29) and only want a poxy 1.8mazda 6, not exactly a flyin machine!

    thanks for any suggestions,
    km

    no ofoence taken, I just seen the 'motoring' forum and thought it was relevent, guess I should go to the insurance forum...

    seriously tho, if this is a problem then you guys should have something in the stickies, the insurance link there is really just information that can be googled;

    Yes I have started ringing around and to save some time on it I was looking for advice on what companies would cover those in my situation, as there seems to be a severe lack of comparison sites and the like in this country (which may be a good thing, who knows);
    The thread was also a small bit of a rant, I mean who over 18 pays over 1k for car insurance for a mid size car!! Or is that normal in Ireland?

    In any other country Ive been in 10year driving and nearly 30 is no longer the young male category (in fact, only when it comes to insurance quotes in ireland am I a young male!)

    Its not as if I will ever claim for anything ever as it will cost too much come renewal time.. feckers..

    anyway, cheers folks, makes me feel better knowing I aint the only one being shafted,...

    now off to see about 'borroing' my parents car for 'occasional use' from the uk..

    (Not actually doing this, I know plenty do, but I will be hear for a while to come so need to get on the system sometime I suppose..)

    You haven't quite said what your driving experience is, just some named.

    I know some insurance companies will recognize named driving experience, Hibernian being one, but yeah just going to have to call around them all.

    The only own insurance driving experience was 1 year in 2003-2004 so wont count for much,,

    I called hibernian and they said they would only quote me for up to 1.6 and thats IF I sat there ignition course..!
    I mean cmon its a 1.8 mazda6 - the slowest in the range, (I dont think its 130bhp, or if it was it wont be now). how messed up is that!

    Anyway, I will try and leave this thread, stop ranting and go make some calls...!
