Business & Law vs. Law & Economics?

    What is the major differences between them?
    (e.g. career paths if you didnt become a solicitor/barrister?)

    Im interested in moving to the US after college, anyone know which one could prove more useful?
    I know the business school has triple accreditation and the business & law one is offered by Quinn.
    I think the Law and economics is part of the law school, so the degree technically wouldnt be 'triple' accredited?:confused:If this even matters to an employer i dont know:rolleyes:

    Not sure which one to put down for next year?
    Could i get feedback from anybody doing them?

    I did Economics up to postgrad (MA) level in UCD.

    I feel Business would have opened more opportunities personally.

    Well, I'm in 3rd year business and law, happy to answer any questions you have. I'm afraid I'm not really sure of what the implications are heading to the States, though I do know of students from both B+L and Law working in US law firms. In terms of business opportunities, Economics will keep open the big merchant banks, I should think.

    It really depends on what you think you will enjoy. There are a lot of management and accountancy classes to take in B+L, would you be happy taking these?

    I'd suggest you take a look at the subject choices here: Law with Economics or Business and Law

    They might give you a better insight into what the differences are. My main advice would be to choose whatever you think you will enjoy more for 4 years, there will always be time after you finish to think about how you will progress into a career, and you may well find your mind has changed by the time you finish.

    I'm doing Law BCL (Just straight law). From what I know B&L does a lot fewer Law credits than the Law with Subjects, but more business credits. Law with Economics will give you the chance to slowly phase out your with subject into fourth year and concentrate on law.

    If you have made your mind up on practicing law than I would advise the Law with Economics option. However if you haven't, or if you would like to specialise in business law. B&L is for you.

    Both are great degrees. I guess if you want to fit in, in B&L you should bleach your hair, hit the GYM and buy some Abercrombie though.

    I heard this was the story for UCD in general???:P;)

    No in Agg its about Jeans that are two skinny, but not skinny, too short, silly shoes, woolen socks and the GAA jersey depicting the sponsors of whatever bog you crawled out of.

    Well I'm in 1st year B & L now. For the first semester we are doing Constitutional Law, Contract and Tort. On the Business end we are doing Macroeconomics, Managment information systems and Maths ( for Business). Next semester we will be keeping the same law subjects but will be doing accounting, Business Management and Micro economics as the business part of the course. In third year you can begin to specialise in the subjects you're doing ( I think) and by 4th year I think you pretty much pick which one you want to go with, ie business or law. But I you can also continue to do a mixture of the two if you so decide, AFAIK.

    On our first day we were told that Business and Law degree is actually technically part of the Law School ( or something to that effect ).

    I would imagine so but I'm not sure. The degree is given by Quinn so one would assume...

    with Business and Law you effectively get a Commerce degree and a Law degree. It is a commerce degree recognised by employers and a Law degree recognised by employers. You are in the same position to become a lawyer/barrister at the end as you would be from taking a pure Law course in UCD and also in the same position for applying to any of the accounting firms. You dont necessarily have to specialise in final year, you could cover all the accounting subjects necessary and all the law modules needed for doing the FE1s.

    im not sure about the law with economics but I presume the law modules are the same as doing pure law or doing BnL!
