    stretching

    Comments:
the 126kg x 6 is the first time i've done a half decent set in a while.
Its been said to be by a good few people at this stage that when there's any sort of decent weight on the bar my descent is fine and I hit the right depth but when i try to come out of the hole I collpase forward and it ends up looking a fugly ass good morning instead of a squat.
Ive started to correct it recently, putting in more core work, front, obliques, back and have been doing the BBB with light weight and concentrating on keeping everything tight

Weighed in today at 109.3kg, an increase of 1.5kg.
that would normally annoy me as Im actually getting further away from double figure bodyweight.

But i also got my body fat checked today and it came in at 139mm from 8 sites so Im down another 9mm from the last time it was checked.
So weight is up but fat is down. happy enough for now.

    Work sets

    10,9,8....3,2,1
    85kg Deadlift

    43kg clean

5 mins of panting later I did some core work.

Plate shifting from side to side

What you do in the dressing room is your business. But that's not the ghey. The ghey is doing a metcon in a gym that runs spiders and has prowlers.

I repeat, and this time in capitals.

I like looking at this crossfit type stuff if only to try to figure out the thinking behind it.

Forget the bench for a minute...the cleans and the deads in the same block? That to me is weird...maybe if it was deads, cleans and box jumps...I could see some logic to that...something heavy slowly, something lighter faster and then something explosive...all targeting the same 'type' of movement.

If it was deads, bench and push jerks...I could sort of see some logic in that as well...deads, cleans and bench press? I don't get that.

I push the prowler a lot, usually on squat and deadlift days and usually with 120kg on it, unless im using the low handles
I did three prowler sessions in 5 days last week.

I just like to vary conditioning and cardio (coz i find "regular" cardio boring) which is why i started doing some no gi bjj, pushing the prowler, trying some crossfit WODs to keep it interesing

    I train in IP.
I dont follow the IP programme
That's no disrespect to Will or Barry.
I have been folllwing the 5/3/1 for over a year and liked it and wanted to stick with it.

My inital plan was to move to dublin for the 3 months of the summer and train 5/6 days a week in a gym that had all the equipment I wanted to use with no gimmicks,no bull****, a great atmosphere and plenty of parking

    IP ticked all those boxes
Training in IP for the three months of the summer hasnt made me much stronger in the big 3 lifts (bench is down, squat is going up and deadlift is almost back to pulling 200kg plus with the straight bar) but I am fitter and leaner than I can remember and actually weigh about 2kg more than i did at the start of the summer and i can do more pull ups, inverted rows and push ups than i could at the start of the summer

I've done an IP test, I do the IP warm up every session and I pick out bits I like at the moment

Since then, Ive got a job in Dublin and will be here for a year so Im gonna switch my training in January to the IP prgramme as I feel 18 months of 5/3/1 is giving it a fair go

ahhh, so thats the confused look on your face was about.
not the fact that i was "dropping a WOD" as Barry put it on the day, you were just trying to figure out the logic behind it.

I dont know the logic, all i know is it was tough, kicked my ass and made me sweat loads

From reading the above i have a question:

Do you have a specific training goal? Rather than picking the parts of training that you like why dont you speak to the coaches about your training goals and how to achieve them.

-If you want to get stronger, speak to the coaches
-If you want to get leaner, speak to the coaches
-If you want both, speak to the coaches

You need to remember that when you train at a facility like IP the coaches are the best piece of equipment available.

    1. Yes, I have goals.
    2. Yes, I talk to Will and Barry all the time.
    3. I have an S&C coaching qualification myself.
    4. Some of my friends who I used to train with when I lived at home in Ros are S&C coaches.
    5. When I said I pick out the bits I like, what I meant by that was that I pick out the flexibility & mobility stuff, I do some of the conditioning blocks to compliment and go hand in hand with the 5/3/1 which also says to incorporate these things.

    I have the bases covered.

    Serious question.

goal isnt so much strength focused anymore.

the goal is to get sub 100kg and lose more and more bodyfat.

Yes, I complain and moan about my bench going down but as long as im getting leaner and fitter, I dont really mind.
Squat and deadlift are getting better.
I just pulled 170 x 6 which is almost exactly where i was in January before the single lifts.

Of course, the ultimate goal would be to do both at the same time.

No offence intended but if your goal is fat loss you need to stop doing 5/3/1 and start doing proper conditioning sessions. If you do three conditioning sessions a week between now and christmas and watch the diet you'll get sub 100kg with no problem. You'll also hit sub 100mm along the way too :D

Keep doing BJJ (please dont call it jits) and some strength session in between to keep it interesting but the conditioning should be your focus.

Read back through my log and you'll see ive been doing 3 and sometimes more "proper" conditioning sessions per week and at least 4 strength sessions per week.

Ok, so you're doing at least three strength sessions and three conditioning sessions a week. It doesnt make sense to me that a 100+ kilo guys bw would go up and lift wouold go down/stagnate while doing this training.

Doesnt matter to me in either case, good luck with your training.

Good fun in raw his evening
Disappointed to fail the 210 attempt, don't think I'm too far away.
Apparently, having 10 pints and being out til 6am doesn't help max effort attempts

Happy to lock out the 90kg push press at the second attempt, want 100kg by Xmas.

    5/3/1 is dead.

    Moving on.

    I'm on deloadish this week.
Gonna start the IP programme next Monday but I'm sick of a sucky bench so started Smolov for my bench today and hopefully I'll get it up a bit.

    Max bench: 100kg.
    Smolov week 1, day 1.
    70kg - 4 x 9

    DB rows
    30kg - 4 x 10

It seems like everyone is down on 5/3/1 - have been wondering myself whether to bother keeping going with it. I think it might be time for a new plan - similar to the one Hanley posted in that thread last night...would like more than 1 day squatting but couldn't do 3 again...the body is too old...be interesting to see what you move on to Liam!

What was the story about PO'C and portion sizes?

It seems like everyone is down on 5/3/1 - have been wondering myself whether to bother keeping going with it.!

Stop the lights, after reading this forum for a while I was led to believe it was a great yoke and now on further examination it seems that people don't like it at all.

What was the story about PO'C and portion sizes?

Story was that PO'C is an amazingly dedicated athlete and ate all the right things all the time.

Then his body fat started going up and they couldn't figure out why until the nutritionist decided to eat with paul for a day.

Breakfast saw Paul eat a salad bowl full of porridge with 500ml milk, flaxseed, nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit and then another handfull of oats cause it was runny.
Worked out at about 1800kcals which is way too big a portion.

Mid morning snack was a handful of nuts, POC has shovels for hands.
So basically, people need to understand portion sizes

Yeah, most don't and I finally came around to the idea that I wasn't gaining from it.
I gave it a good go, 14 cycles so 14 months of my time.

I need to improve on the three powerlifts I'm gonna compete again so need a change

I did it for about 6 months and made progress with it. Although I probably would have made progress at most programmes if I stuck to them. I enjoyed it for its emphasis on the four lifts as well as breaking up the monotony of steady linear weight progression. It was a great one for helping you go stronger on some days and weaker on your crap days. Got you used to heavy weights too.

I don't think I'd do it again soon though.
