kk discounts, brian purcell jewellers, o connell mall....remeber the upstairs toilets!! now used to be where nada is now. mk sports was a fruit n veg shop. the emperor used to have a chinese takeaway on the corner of oconnell st where that clothes shop is now. niamhs coffee shop was upstairs. then there was token remember???

the pound shop down the narrow st. jermnaze... they used to sell porcelain dolls n trinkets, loved that shop! days was another shop that was where gamestop is now, sold kids clothes. clingans shoe shop..... the cobblers up the laneway beside the harp, is that still there???

the music shop down by the courthouse, i bought a recorder in there! its still there but looks like noones been near it since it was shut about 20 years ago??

The cycle shop by the White memorial was Patsy Cahills, (not sure what it was called tho) , Yes CBC Radio was in the Westgate upto Dec 31st 1988. (I worked there for 6 years.) Brenans Fruit and veg was also just upfrom where KK Discount are now, beside Dunnes. RTV rentals was the tv shop beside the West gate. The Sarah Boutique was across the road, Sean Hackett expanded the store taking it over. Blame James Restaurant was up Wellington st. Kelvin Lowes Caraway on the corner. Yes, there was a KFC in the old ESB site, (now Menaris) only lasted about a year though) That site was also Clerys Carpet shop, which burned doewn in a big fire late 70`s, and it was Bosco`s Fruit and veg aswell.

What about Chappies meat factory, went on to be owned by a number of other companies. The roundabout at cherrymount was known as Jacksons cross, the garage owned by Dillons was owned by someone else then, name has left me. Dillons had a car sales at top of Iristown, and there was a sweet shop on the corner. And further down Irishtown the only shop was Ned Ryans at the corner of the lane going down to the Island Rowing club.

Anyone have any idea what year they pedestrianised Mitchell St? I remember cars being on it but was never old enough to drive..... Clonmel's Grafton St as it can be affectionatley known.

Thats right, Chappies bcame Clonmel foods, and later, Fair Oak Foods, There was a little sweet shop up from Ned Ryans called Willie Dees, the name is still over the door in the stonework. Andy Dillons garage, main VW dealer.Kinsellas pub beside the Postoffice in Irishtown, early to mid 90`s cant remember what it was Called before that. Hughie Houlihans shop on Abbey Road.

C.B.C Closed down in 1988?...Ah all good memories here....Anyone remember Streamers nite club in Hotel Minella,or a little further out..the Falconry pub...tis many's the pint and game of pool I had there.

Was in clonmel yesterday and noticed that the video shop at the corner of gladstone st. and the superquinn carpark has changed back to the Vision Store (was chartbusters for a few years I think) is it back in the ownership of the guy who had it when it was the vision store before?

I used to go there every week to rent a game for the megadrive or the psone later on, the guy was a wicked sound lad.

I remember Willie Dees, everyone who went to the Pres would go in there on the way to school. They sold sweets from jars and he would weigh them. Willie was very tall and wore a brown shop coat. He never said too much, silent type. Clonmel has changed so much I try to make an annual visit to keep up with the changes. What is unchanging of course are the beautiful mountains.

Nope, Chartbusters have gone out of business. John Fraher, owner of the Vision Store, moved his business to the Poppyfields which is now Slatterys.

My best memories from being a kid centre around Mrs. Denmead's and "Mug" O'Brien's sweetshops in Parnell St, right across from the Ritz cinema (now the Credit Union).
Mrs. Denmead was the most decent person, and the amount of licquorice and hard sweets you could get for 3p there was amazing. O'Brien's shop had everything, but you'd be a bit afraid of the man himself, he looked so stern, altho' he was in fact a very nice man.
If you had big money to spend - I'm talking 6p or 1/- (1 shilling) - you could wander up to Gavin's shop or Redmonds.

Hi Ponster, I love clonmel out of all the places i lived in Ireland. The place has lots of charachter and beautiful arches and buildings not just a boring one streat up and one down kind of town. Everything is there, best restaurants, bars, entertainment and a shopping paradise for shop acholics

The Royal Oak - back in the mid 70's was the only place to be!!!!
had all the good bands and musicians. used to be great craic there.

That was Noel O Briens pub, He was off his game, He would put on a judges wig and start hitting the hammer off the bar counter, He used to go to the real court below and act as a solicitor. He was no fool though.

I was thinking back to Clonmel when i was a child. My mother would walk in to Clonmel, from near Lisronagh.We used to have a donkey, but he was stolen. I seem to recall a shop that was dark and dingy, that had a lot of lamp shades. I think the lady that owned it was called May Fahy? I cant remember any other shops so i think i may have been left there while my mother done her shopping. Then the long walk home. I left there when i was 12 in 1958, it was 40 years before i got back home for a visit, but after walking to Clonmel so many times i knew where to find my old house, I dont suppose anyone on here remembers that shop.

I have a feeling the shop you are talking about could be the one at Parnell Street? Paintings etc in the window?

My favourite shop was the Greenie on the Narrow Street. Gr8 sweets. It was opposite Miss McGraths (well a few doors up from it).

I also remember when Five Star was on O'Connell Street. I guess that must have been the 70's or early 80's. Winstons was on the other side up near Moroneys.
