Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Vodafone 70mb. Usually getting 50+, but noticed pages were loading slowly tonight and checked it, receiving... this. Download speed has gone down every time I've tested it. Simply bizarre.

Having similar problems here, but on Eircom. I'm just outside Kilkenny.

Pretty poor show, we're on Vodafone fibre too about 100m from our cabinet, and regularly get 60+. As always with new fibre connections though, you might find it improves over the next week or so.

What's your attenuation and SNR margin? That's the main consideration. If it's good you can phone Vodafone and they will increase your speed on the spot.

attenuation 38.5,downstream snr 13.1 downstream line rate 43012kbit/s phoned em tonight. was told that I shouldnt be complaining with the speed max of 43013 is good as there would be "bounceback"(their words) if they increased the speed and as long as I was having no problems then they more or less said tough luck they wouldnt be doing anything. I said surely i should get at least 55-60 wired with being only 120metres from the cabinet and she said no. they deliberatly have maxed my line at 43013 to guarantee me a perfect service.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

    Your attenuation couldn't be 38.5!

I phoned them twice about increasing my speed and they were excellent and did it no problem.

Done the Ping test earlier, (I'm on the 50mpbs bundle) and was getting 122mpbs. Down to 85 now. So it looks as if it has kicked in.

Was with Three Mobile Broadband for quite a while...

    3278527964.png

Talked with Eircom, and got a temporary setup with them to try out...

    3347057934.png

    Why was I expecting better?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭tinodz

So, after an hour thinking and trying everything I might have done "wrong," I have come to the conclusion I am not in the wrong, and those would be the speeds I would be paying Eircom for if I were to continue.

I guess I will not be continuing then.

Yea I rebooted there and am getting nearly 10mbps upload which is double what I was getting, but download is half of what I was on.. 24mbps on ethernet cable. I suspect its due to peak times, will try again later

Can anyone tell me what ping you'd expect ~160m from a VDSL cabinet?

Apologies if this is a dumb question, just looking for any guesstimate from the tech-heads.

    Cheers!

It's not possible to determine that. Pings depend on Eircom's infrastructure. If Eircom have cables running all over the country, you'll get crappy ping times. Your packets also have to pass through routers and the more of these routers, the worse your ping.

Satellite internet has terrible pings because the signal has to travel 22,300 miles into Space and back again down again.

    Thanks for the reply.

I just assumed (incorrectly it seems) that with the cabinet so close, and the fact that it's Fibre my ping should be better than my current DSL set-up.

I guess I'll have to wait and see.

    Thanks again!

The server is in Carlow. Go back to the Speedtest website and you'll see 7 dots in the Republic. Choose the one in Cork, you might get a lower ping.

There's a server in Carlow? I live in Carlow and I never knew that, it must only be new then, I should be able to get great pings so.

Edit: They're hosted by Black Knight which is literly less than 5 minutes walking distance from me!

This is a vast improvement on the previous speeds and ping I was able to get. I'm about 190m from the cab and live in Letterkenny. Now for the vectoring. BTW I've managed to lock myself out of the XDSL stats so can't post anything till I sort it.

Will everyone on Eircom automatically get whatever the line can handle when vectoring becomes enabled, or how does that work?

@PeadarB what Eircom package are you actually paying for? 50/15, 70/20 or what?
