Could be out now myself, a week too late to defer, alas, there's always next year.

Ah, my plan to injure all the competition is slowly working. I might just win this thing yet! Anyone I cant get to, I'll just have to depend on the sniper to take them out on the course.

I have to drop down to the half. Various injuries and niggles meant I couldn't get the miles in. Disappointed but almost relieved at the same time!

This is my first ever run so looking forward to it apprehensively! :)

Mind you I only gave myself a 7 week window of training for the half, so what I do over the next 4 1/2 weeks better be damn good! Intend to run a 10k race in Newmarket on Fergus on the 27th to get a feel for a race day.

I would love to do the Connemara 1/2 marathon but didn't register on time? Does anyone have a number and isn't able to run or doesn't want it. I would pay for it...:)

You're out of order FlanB I'm afraid. No soliciting for entries as transfers are not allowed in any event.

If you really want to get in you can still get a charity place. Follow the Charities link on the website, and pay 250 Euro.

What is totally out of order is asking for someone else's number. It's against the rules of the Connemara marathon and against the rules of boards.

With so many ultra dropouts it would be very rude of me to let the organisers down by joining the dropout list.

Because you have not seen the size of my ankle!!

But, you are right, i may be ok in 4 weeks time. Though, I had pb with knee a month ago, pb with achilles tendonitis few weeks ago, and twisted ankle today. My reading of all of this is that my body is complaining about overuse. Though ankle today was bad luck, foot landed on loose stone. May be an ultra and associated training is not yet for me. One is to know its limits and know when to stop, otherwise everything could become torture.
I have make the mistake once to show up at the start of a race while i was not in top form...i bailed out after 7 miles of the Dublin Half & learnt a lesson.

Sorry to hear that. Obviously it's entirely up to you to decide if your body is up to the training and racing of an Ultra. On the other hand, I think if we wait until everything is perfect then we'll never even attempt these distances. My thinking is, running an ultra is by default pushing past your limits.

This is not medical advice obviously, but twisted ankles are one of those injuries which look bad but once the swelling comes down after a few days, generally you'll be advised by a doctor or physio thats its perfectly ok to walk or run on as long as its in a straight line so I'd be hopeful you'll make connemara yet.

Contrary to this there are may more serious injuries, like a stress fracture, which people will persist with running on for weeks just because visibly it looks ok and refer to it as a 'niggle'

Back from A&E as too much in pain this morning. Torn ligaments is the verdict.
Doctor could not believe that i ran 28kms after i twisted my ankle. May be that's why so much damaged was done, so my own mistake.
No running for at least 3 or 4 weeks + physio afterwards + gentle back into running.
x-ray on Wednesday/Thursday if swelling has not reduced by then.
But i am not giving up, and will run this wicklow ultra course as soon as allowed!
I will even be better prepared for Connemara Ultra in 2011.

Sorry to hear you're out. Sucks being put out by something that can happen so easily and is out of your control. Dingle Ultra might be a good one for you to shoot for now. :)

I read that the race numbers are being e-mailed out this evening. The Ultra looks like being a competitive race, with two former winners and a couple of previous 3rd and 4th place finishers (who are in top recent form) in contention for the handful of spots at the pointy end of the field.

Anyone planning on heading out (Ultra) at 7:50-8min/mile pace?

Is there a charity shoe collection this year?

Would many Ultras be expected to hit the start line of the marathon as it starts i.e run 6:50 miles for the first 13 miles?

Not too many. Assuming pretty even pacing, you'd be looking at around 1:30 splits for the three consecutive half marathons. however, the first 13.1 miles are the flattest (and slightly downhill), so I'd imagine that anyone aiming for sub 4:30 will have gone through before the start of the full marathon(just). Looking at the results, between 1 and 3 every year finish sub 4:30. You might get a couple of others who pass through, but drop off the pass towards the end.

I read that the race numbers are being e-mailed out this evening.
    Anyone get their number yet?
Should have been emailed this morning per http://www.connemarathon.com/2010-race-numbers ?
Anyone planning on heading out (Ultra) at 7:50-8min/mile pace?
If nothing goes wrong between now and the starting line, I am going to target 1:40 for the first third of the race, so will be heading off slightly faster than that. Then will do a re-evaluation based on how I feel and re-adjust pace as seems appropriate.

    stoopid question alert.

My race entry surname is different from my photo id surname ...

I knew a day would come when only half changing my name when I got married would be a hassle but I never imagined it would be a road race that would get me! Will that be a problem?

While I'm hoping (dreaming?) to hit that pace on average, I'm planning to start slowly over the first 10 miles. I know that these are the flattest miles, I've done that race twice already. From these very 2 races I've learnt that starting at too fast a pace will cost you 10 times more if you blow up over the last third, and I'm heading out conservatively as a result.

Thanks Thomas. I actually read over your race reports for your last two Connemara Ultras yesterday, to get an idea of what I should expect. Some excellent reading, so a belated thank you for going to the trouble of running the two races, and producing such excellent guides!

I still have not found a mechanism to hone-in on an appropriate pace for this distance, so with that in mind, I'll stick to the pace that I paced Dublin at last year, which was very comfortable and left me feeling like I could run on comfortably. I have little doubt that I'll face a horrendous challenge along the way, but I reckon to run at a slower pace could equally create it's own issues, as it would be an unnatural running form. 3.5 weeks to go.. Must go running.

You'll be fine. Bring something else with your 'new' name too. We do a quick check against DOB anyway.

    Post arrived!
There is slight discrepency between the details in the email and the web site.
On the web site, it shows my category correctly as M40.
On the email, my category is "Senior" ?

A few emails have the incorrect category.
The website is definitive, and hopefully correct, information.

My OH (and quite a large number of people on the website) have no number after their names. Also the e-mail she received did not include a number. Should I tell her to give up her training, there's no point? :p

as Enduro said in another post--ultras are never won in the first half but thats where they are lost

Yea - give up now :-)
Drop an email to info@connemarathon.com with the details - Hopefully a small glitch. It will be Thursday before we look at that though.

Go out at an unsustainable pace and you are certainly going to suffer later on.
A constant effort (not pace) as much as possible right throughout the race makes sense to me and there are solid scientific reasons in terms of minimizing lactate build-up why should be the case. Start out slower than your target pace on the flattest section (first third) of the course, and the corollary is that you need to run faster on a tougher section of the course to remain on target.
This assumes you have an appropriate target pace for the race in the first place.

Yes, but if your target pace turns out to be slightly faster than you can sustain in reality, you will go through hell after 30 miles. Been there, done that, no need to do it again. That's why I'm starting slowly.

Ok, let me try another tactic. For those of you who have run this in the past, how does your planned race pace for the 39.3 miles compare to your general recovery pace?

Very true. Evaluating the appropriate pace is a big part of the challenge.
However, I don't just want to compete the race but also finish it in a time that is close to the limit of my potential and I am prepared to run a risk to do that.
I am just going to take a call that if I can sustain a pace over two long training back to back runs, I should be able to manage the same pace in the actual race or at least know after 13.1 KM that something is starting to go wrong. Whether or not this is a valid strategy will only be determined on the day.

I am actually more worried on the wear and tear on the body over 63 KMs especially since I normally run off-road. Not sure though slowing down will necessarily prevent injuries emerging over the distance.

Let me think. In 2007 I ran this 6 months after a 3:28 in Dublin. My recovery pace would have been somewhere between 8:30 and 9:00, and I ran the ultra in 5:40, which is about 8:40 pace. Pretty much my recovery pace then.

In 2008 I ran this 6 months after a 3:12 in Loch Ness, and my recovery pace would have been much closer to 8:00 (say, 8:15). However, I spent the entire month of January in bed with a bad pneumonia, which obviously completely f***ed up my training. I ended up running Connemara anyway, in 5:50, about 8:55 pace.

However, both times I thought that I would be able to sustain a pace close to 8:00, but was proven wrong each time.

    In 2007 I ran the 13.1 mile splits in about 1:43, 1:52 and 2:05.
In 2008 I did the same splits in roughly 1:47, 1:56 and 2:07 (I think).

Keep in mind that the road gets hillier with each segment.

The times don't quite reflect the amount of pain I went through over the last 13 miles each time. I re-read my race reports last night and was cringing when the memory of those miles came flooding back to me (why, then, am I going back for more?)

This time I'm determined to start slowly. After 10 easy miles there are still about 30 miles left to run at a slightly faster pace. I haven't got a specific pace in mind. It's whatever comes easy. If it's 8:30, as in some of my training runs, fine. If it's 8:10, as in some other training runs, still fine.

Last year I aimed to pace at 10 minute miles as I just wanted to finish. Ran even splits for the first 26 - at 2:07 each although the second half must have been 'faster' as I struggled in parts for fuel and walked for about 2 minutes. For the third 13 I was going at a decent pace, one slow 14 minute mile then my battery went in my garmin and I kept going till I found some other ultras and asked them the time, they kept taking walking breaks so I ended up doing the same just because it was nice to have company at last and I knew that I'd still finish in under 7 hours by sticking with them. Third 13 took my waaaaaay longer than the first 26 though.

Nothing will ever replace the feeling of seeing 'mile 27' on the side of the road though, that was incredible. :)
