If your friend is located anywhere near Cork, I can pass on the number for an experienced motorhome person.

No ,cheers all the same, he bought it up the north.

The piston ring came through the engine, proabably due to bearing wear. Oil pouried out and engine light came on. There is 77k on it, its the type of thing that could happen ,cant really predict it i dont think , bad luck i suppose.

The diesel Ducato , of 10 yr old vintage is either a 2.5 or 2.8 . Most likely . Normally fairly bulletproof tbh . Any competent mechanic can sort it , not just a motorhome person .

Piston ring coming through the engine? Due to bearing wear? That is odd... the crank bearings must have been ready to fall out of it!

I'd expect an engine like that to be able for much more than 77k.

Any mechanic will be able to look at that - find one that specialises in HGVs if you can.

its now in a local garage up the north and the seller has agreed (by text anyways) to meet half the repairs ,at least it might soften the blow a little

Ducato parts are hard to come by as your friend will soon find. A similar thing happend to me 3 days after I bought it so I rebuilt the engine about 2yrs ago. It cost a fortune, my advice would be shop around for a mechanic, a lot of them have never worked on a ducato before so will take ages to fix it and therefore charge you a fortune.
I have a ducato for sale for parts or repair

    MODEDIT:
please advertise your van in the for sale thread, thank you
