share the song lyric(s) that are important to you that changed your life
or that you try to live your life by

write the lyric line and/or give your reasons for choosing it

e.g know your rights all 3 of em
you have the right not to be killed. murder is a crime unless it is done by a policeman or an aristocrat oh know your rights- from know your rights by the clash

the last verse is great too
you have the right to freeeeee speech, as long as your not dumb enough to actually try it oh know your rights

this song shows whats wrong with the systems that run the world
the rich and powerful are protected while the few rights we the poor masses get are not really rights atall --- great song to sing when your pissed of at f.f or f.g or any of those crooks in suits

    please post! and enjoy

"We will always be much more human than we wish to be"

Everyone is human, has emotions and cares about things, does stuff that doesn't make logical sense, which is both terrible and wonderful. Sometimes life would be easier if we could just stop caring and approach things objectively.

(I can never explain it properly :( But the first time I heard it, it just struck a chord with me)

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

"Let fury have the hour, anger can be power, D'you know that you can use it?"

From "Clampdown", by The Clash. Made me realise that if you don't like something, don't sit around moaning about it, get up of your arse and try to change it!

And there is a great line from U2's "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" as well, think it sums up a pretty complex relationship in my life perfectly:

"I don't need...I don't need to hear you say that if we weren't so alike,
You'd like me a whole lot more"

"I've spent too many years at war with myself
The doctor has told me it's no good for my health.
The search for perfection is all very well
but to look for Heaven is to live here in Hell"

From "Consider Me Gone" by Sting.

Was going through a crap time some years ago and this was a bit of a poke in the ribs to do something about it.

"And as I try to make my way through the Ordinary World, I will learn to survive"
From "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran.

Good listening after a very bad break-up in my 20's.

    Too many to mention

"In a land there's a town, and in that town there's a house, and in that house there's a woman, and in that woman there's a heart I love, I'm gonna take it with me when I go"

Take It With Me - Tom Waits

I've just always found it uplifting

"When sleep it comes, the dreams come running clear. The hawks of morning cannot reach you here"

John O Dreams - Christy Moore

Always helps me anytime it's all just getting too much, no matter what the day throws at you, nobody can touch your dreams.

"The highway's jammed with broken heroes, on a last chance power drive"

Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen

The little man making a stand, beautifully uplifting.

    Hatebreed-This Is Now.

Another memory and I'm asking myself
why cant I let the past be the past.
Once and for all take a hold of the future
And not let it control what I aspire to have.
I see where my decisions have brought me
Whats done is done and its time to start again
Can't let it tear me in two or waste me away
    I gotta believe
    Cause this is now
How can I change tomorrow if I can't change today.
    This is now
If I control myself I control my destiny.

    and
    Sixx:AM-Tomorrow
    Tomorrow
You're gonna have to live with the things you say
    Tomorrow
You'll have to cross bridges that you burned today
    Tomorrow...
And everything you do, it's coming back for you
You'll never outrun what waits for you
    Tomorrow.

I think the lyrics that matter the most to me are the ones that reflect how I feel about the relationships I'm in at any given time, and the three best are "Ballerina", "Do Right Woman" and "Still in Love With You".

Although I love all of Astral Weeks, the lyrics to "Ballerina" perfectly capture the excitement and nervousness of new relationships...

    Well I may be wrong
But something deep in my heart tells me I'm right and I don't think so
You know I saw the writing on the wall
When you came up to me
Child, you were heading for a fall

...While Aretha Franklin's version of "Do Right Woman" picks up the tension at the heart of a lot of relationships (although to be fair, I could listen to her sing the phone book, so maybe it's not the lyrics that matter as much here).

Take me to heart and I’ll always love you
And nobody can make me do wrong
Take me for granted, leaving love unshown
Makes will-power weak and temptation strong

And Thin Lizzy's "Still in Love With You" perfectly captures the sentiments at the end of a relationship.

Think I'll just fall to pieces/If I don't find something else to do
This sadness never ceases/I'm still in love with you

And I know this thread asks about lyrics, but honestly the music that most changed my life in terms of reflecting the full spectrum of human emotion is Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album...there are no words, but his horn and Coltrane's sax are more meaningful that most penned lyrics are.

"My son, this world is for the taking but only if you want it bad enough"

Dave Couse from A House on the track "Slipping Away" from the album "I am the Greatest"

I'm hoisting the flag but it keeps hanging down.

I will help you if I can, I will kill you if I must

    dEUS - Great band

Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I, I built my life around you
    But time makes you bolder
    Children get older
    I'm getting older too
    I'm getting older too

    This is so true

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 73 ✭✭lifelonglufc

    Arcade Fire - Wake Up
    "Somethin' filled up
    My heart with nothin'
Someone told me not to cry

    But now that I'm older
    My heart's colder
And I can see that it's a lie"

Linkin Park - Pushing Me Away
    "The sacrifice is never knowing
    Why I never walked away
Why I played myself this way
Now I see your testing me pushes me away
    I've tried like you
To do everything you wanted too
    This is the last time
I'll take the blame for the sake of being with you"

And to quote the often bashed Blizzards (I feel this was for once some decent lyrics outta that big Breslin fella!)
Reflects the fad culture we now live in that the younger generation can't get enough of.
Ironic that it's The Blizzards then :o
    The Blizzards - Domino Effect
    "You wear you're skinny jeans
And genuflect to scene's that don't mean a thing
Who gives a damn when some trash magazines
    That say listen to these
Cos they could save you're life
I'm quite aware of these lies that we are fed"

There's loads more these are just the tip of the iceberg! *prepares for bashing onslaught for cheesy choices* :p

Sounds weird that a song from a supposedly ''disposable'' glam metal/1980's band would be so uplifting and would be the perfect thing to play when you feel under pressure and need a bit of an escape:

"Are you tired of working 9 to 5
And are you fed up with your boring life
When your master tells you what to do
Years you wasted looking back at you
When life is driving you crazy
You feel your losing your mind

Don't give up, don't give up
    When the road gets rough
Don't give up, don't give up
    Even when it's tough"

The first verse of the song ''Don't Give Up'' by White Lion (from the album 'Pride' (1987))

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 251 ✭✭fikay

I always liked the album but in times of strife I've been repeating the line
'The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place'
    like a mantra.

    It makes me smile.

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

    "You shut your mouth
    how can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
    just like everybody else does"

I've always thought this was a terribly sad song. I'll let you folks take from the lyrics what you will. I can't say they changed my life at all, but in short they remind me that everyone has feelings.

I can't think of any life changing lyrics, but sometimes the only thing you can do is to just "keep on keepin' on"

"The only thing i knew how to do was to keep on keepin' on,"

Bob Dylan - "Tangled up in blue".

"Meet the new boss , same as the old boss" - The Who

"Welcome my son , welcome to the machine" - Pink Floyd.

    John Lennon
"Life is what happens to you,
While you're busy making other plans." - 'Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)'

    "I was feeling insecure,
You might not love me anymore." - 'Jealous Guy'

    "Some of you sittin' there,
With your cock in your hand,
    Don't get you nowhere,
    Don't make you a man
    I hearda somethin'
Bout my Ma and my Pa
    They didn't want me,
So they made me a star." - 'I Found Out'

" The dream is over: what can I say? " - 'God'

    I could go on, but I won't!

    Bob Dylan

    "Love is so simple.
    To quote a phrase
You've known it all the time
I'm learning it these days." - 'You're A Big Girl'

"Say for me that I'm alright,
Though things get kind of slow.
She may think, that I've forgotten her,
Don't tell her it isn't so." - 'If You See Her Say Hello'

What can I say about Dylan, amazing and utterly timeless.

    U2
    "Love is clockworks,
    And cold steel.
    Fingers,
    Too numb to feel.
    Squeeze the handle,
    Blow out the candle,
Love is blindness.'' - 'Love Is Blindness'

    Classic album, great song.

    The Flaming Lips

"I was waiting on a moment,
But the moment never came." - 'Ego Trippin' (At The Gates of Hell)
Unbelievably good song. One of the most affecting I've ever heard.

    Pink Floyd

"No-one told you when to run,
    You missed the starting gun...-
The time is gone, the song is over
Thought I'd something more to say.." - 'Time'

Those lyrics really hit me when I listened to the album for the first time, what a finish to a song.

    Nirvana

"I miss the comfort in being sad." - 'Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge'

One of my favourite lyrics from Cobain, humorous, depressing but true all the same.

    Sting

    "A stone's throw from Jerusalem:
I walked a lonely mile in the moonlight.
Though a million stars were shining,
My heart was lost on a distant planet
That whirls around the April moon,
Whirling in an arc of sadness."- 'Mad About You'

I had never really heard poetry in popular songs before I listened to Sting's music, it was revelatory for me. The Soul Cages is a great album, and yet most people I know have not listened to his solo work. The whole album is so poetic.

    Rory Gallagher

"I'm only living for the moment
    When I hear your voice
Oh I'm waiting, I don't have any choice
    And the day is long-
So won't you come where you should be?!" - 'I Fall Apart'

Always thought he was one of the best lyricists I had ever heard from the blues scene, produced some really great original lyrics.

    Stevie Wonder

"I've always felt that tommorow is for those
Who are too much afraid to go past yesterday,
And start living for today." - 'Joy Inside My Tears'

Again, classic album, and I one of my favourite songs.

    Super Furry Animals

    "We'll go to Miami
    Bring old friends and family
    We'll stay out and party
    Does Will Smith lie?
    Does he
Ever break down and cry?"- Fragile Happiness

A really surreal, but excellent lyric. Made me laugh and think at the same time!

    The Beatles

"Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
    With tangerine trees
    And marmalade skies.."

Loved the imagery of that entire song.

    "Half of what I say is meaningless;
Still I say it just to reach you...
    Sleeping sand, silent cloud.."

I feel like I could go on forever about The Beatles, Lennon and Dylan, but those are some just some that've come to mind. Great thread idea OP.

    Time - Pink Floyd

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
    You missed the starting gun

An utterly brilliant warning against procrastination and wasting the short amount of time that we have alive.

Of course this land is dangerous!
    All of the animals
    Are capably murderous.

    When I was a boy,
My big brother held on to my hands,
Then he made me slap my own face.
I looked up to him then, and still do.
He was trying to teach me something.
Now I know what it was!
Now I know what he meant!
Now I know how it is!

    One must eat the other
    Who runs free before him.
Put them right into his mouth
While fantasizing the beauty of his movements.
    A sensation not unlike
    Slapping yourself in the face...
    Slapping yourself in the face...
    Slapping yourself in the face...

Jane's Addiction - took me a long time to figure out what he meant.
