Is it possible to send an advert to a phone that would upload the mobile phone number to the bluetooth server if the user elects to receive the advert? Obviously the advert would have to be a mini application with some intelligence rather then a simple file. Has anyone done something like this?

    Thanks.

Not without the user typing in their phone number. There is no way to get the phone number (MSISDN) of your phone from an application as this isn't stored on the phone or SIM

It wouldalso be potentially in contravention to data privacy. Bluetooth is a function of a mobile device that is unconnected to the device use as a mobile device. It just so happens that the most common portable enabled device is a mobile phone.

Harvesting a mobile number because they received or opted to receive a bluetooth message would be like saying that because a household received a letter by post that you should be able to harvest their telephone number.

You would want to check very carefully the legaliy of application that would harvest the recipients mobile number before proceeding.

As has been suggested, Bluetooth is simply a transport medium, so whether you use HTTP, MMS or whatever is irrelevant.

What is important is what you deliver to the phone with Bluetooth. In this regard, you would need to be sending them an application, which would have access to the handset API's required to get this information.
