Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Portable HD Problem...any suggestions?

Hi, two days ago I purchased a Western Digital Elements 250GB 2.5" (USB Powered) portable hard drive.

I backed up some stuff off a Vista machine on to it, then backed up some stuff off an Ubuntu Linux machine. I in the mean time restored some of this backed up information on to a Windows 7 machine. Then I backed up some stuff off another Vista machine and finally backed up from a XP Pro (SP2) machine.

After that the device was put away and just this afternoon I plugged it back in to the same Windows 7 machine (same usb port) and the little light on the portable hd flashed away and windows did not auto detect anything. In to My Computer I went and still no sign of the hd being mounted. After a min or so of waiting, I pull out the device and up pops a message on Win7 saying the device needs to be formatted before use. So I take the portable hd over to the XP machine and then the vista machine and both those machines say the same thing.

    WTF

I would understand if it was a case that all operating systems above were using different versions of NTFS, but this device was pre-formatted to NTFS by the manufacturer and could be auto-mounted and accessed by all of the above right out of the box. The last action to the device was a "read", so I can't understand how the filesystem could have been corrupted since then. For the record the portable has been sitting on the same desk since it was last used and has definately not received any sort of knock, the noise the disk makes when powered up sounds 100% normal.

    Any ideas?

Can you run an error check on the drive? (Probably not I suppose if it is being recognised as unformatted.)

No No!, you're right. chkdsk /f sorted it out under Windows 7.

    Cheers mate ;)
