What would happen if the dam burst that would be worse than this situation? Is it something to do with electricity supply? Sorry if that's a stupid question-I'm just curious.

Well if you've ever seen the dam, you'd see there a massive amount of water behind it, had the dam burst, there'd have been massive devastation all the way down the river so oddly, the only way to stop it is to release some of the water.

Hope all those who are affected are doing alright, UCC is fucc'd badly so best of luck to all students down there and residents.

It's such a strange morning. The sun is shining, 2 separate postmen delivered ebay packages to me this morning, one was registered post, the other normal post. It seemed really strange for everything to be so "business as usual" when there is such cahos and devestation so close by.

I want to go out to see what's happening because I don't want to spend the day in the house when something like this is happening. I want to see the damage for myself instead of just looking at the pictures.

Yes it might have something to do with the electricity supply alright :):P

Ya, its quite a nice morning alright, just got out after heading in for college as normal, at 20 past &! Found out ass soon as i got in things were cancelled!

So basically releasing the water caused "controlled" flooding and if they didn't release it the flooding would be much worse.

Where is the money to clean this mess up going to come from?

That could be Monday off for me - I've a lecture and tutorial down there.

I presume the WGB was sandbanked, or something, with all the new equipment and computers inside there! Same with the computer in the Connolly!

You very well could get what you want. The dam having to release water due to having 8 times what it usualy deals with(breakingnews.ie) more severe rain due in cork later tonight and high tide coinciding with the rain. Baton down the hatches i say.;)

If anyone is without water they have some in the off license near Lennoxes.

A friend of mine is working in there and what he told me was very heartening. They've dropped the price of water to cost price. And they're ordering in 5 litre drums for tomorrow. You can put your name down for them and they'll ring you when they get them in.

It's good to see people not gouging and doing the decent thing. I'm very impressed with them.

Its strange, the power to our plug sockets was went around 3 last night, but we still had lights working. I dont know if our landlord has flood insurance!

They are on different circuits. Usually sockets are on one loop, cooker and other white appliances are on another loop and then lights are on a third loop.

It's cause the sockets and lights are wired into different trip switches,The plug would of tripped but the lights weren't in water(i assume) so won't go off! At least I think so!

Some of the photos from the Mardyke - not mine. Will probably be closed for about a month as the floor of the hall is now floating, as it quite a lot of furniture!

Load of equipment inside destroyed as well

Last one shows where the pool cover cuurently lies

Ah yes, Cork "the Venice of the North". Saw a picture where some one photoshoped a gondola onto the grand parade, with the above caption next to it. Will post a link to it if I can find it.

EDIT: found it http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055744976&page=8. Aout half way down the page.

Sucks about the Mardyke...that'll cost a fortune to sort out!! And as for people playing in the water...I personally wouldn't go near it, most of what is at surface is going to have sewage in it.

Yeah if I was walking barefoot last night then I'd want a tetnis shot tbh...

Some of the stuff is disgusting! I was at home today where there was flooding, and you could see where the floodwaters were at their height, but it left a trail of sludge and slime - looked disgusting and stank!

Can't believe people went swimming in it - would they go swimming in the Lee when its not in flood - highly doubt it:D

Couldn't believe there was eejits swimming in the lake outside the main college gates last nite, they'd really want to have their heads examined. Saw a lot of people taking off shoes and wading thru the water. So glad i kept mine on, you really dont know what you're stepping on and what kind of crap (literally) the flood has dragged up from the manholes.

What a crazy 48 hours or so. Ireland robbed of qualifying for the world cup at the hands of the french man which they call Henry and now Cork is flooded. Had a pharmacy party last night in vic lodge. Place got flooded so we were flooded in for the night so we had to crash there for the night! Managed to get evacuated by the means of a tractor with a trailer attached to the back! All in all despite it all, happy days!

Very decent of the CIT president to allow his official car to be used to evacuate UCC students.
