Does anyone know which departments were causing all the confusion as a matter of interest? I'm living with a psych nursing student and she was very bewildered. The email was quite funny, nicely pointed use of the word "ALL"

B.I.S....

****in knobhead himself no doubt..

know a few medicine and therapy students were told to come in for lectures etc. on wednesday/thursday, one of em emailed the president's office and he said, essentially, that noone has to do anything, and they're very very angry at the departments that're trying to make students come in.

The departments are still emailing students telling them to come to lectures? That's pretty bad form, considering the President has emphasised that ALL lectures should be cancelled.

Eventually they're gonna have to send an email around that simply says:
"Dear Student,
Seriously, just fcuk off for a week would ya?
Yours in skull & crossbones etc."

That'll learn 'em.

I hope the have security on around the clock for the evacuated apartments. Otherwise an up to date thief could have their pick of apartments and spend all night going through them looking for goodies.

There was an email sent out today - sorry I didn't post it earlier, haven't been at home. Surprised no one else saw it!

Hi Everyone,

Students living in the Castlewhite, Victoria Lodge and University Hall
complexes can collect belongings TODAY and for the rest of the week between
9am and 6pm.

There is a manager on site in each complex to facilitate this.

Please call the Student Union helplines on 0214903218 or 0214902953 if you
have any questions.

We will have another full University Wide Update shortly.

Ian Power sent out this detailed summary

LECTURES
All lectures have been cancelled until November 30th. We have received confirmation that ALL departments have now complied with this directive.

PLACEMENTS
We have had confirmation that all teaching in medicine and health (including nursing) has been postponed for the week (apparently including clinical activities as at least two of the hospitals are severely impacted). Dentistry is still raising issues but currently teaching postponement is in place.

ASSIGNMENTS
All staff have been asked to extend assignment deadlines for a minimum of one week. Students badly affected by the flooding are asked to contact their department to see how they will be facilitated.

UCC/CIT COURSES
The UCC portion of any joint UCC/CIT courses is definitely cancelled. Architecture students have been informed there is no teaching this week by CIT/UCC. We are waiting for an update from CIT on Biomedical Science.

EXAMS
Any exams scheduled between Nov 20th and 27th will be rescheduled. We are waiting for an update on exams after this time - including the XMAS exams.

EXTRA WEEK OF TERM
There will be an extra teaching week added to the end of term - December 14th-18th. It is not clear whether any exams will take place during that week or if it will be just lectures. We are waiting on an update.
Visiting students are being asked to seek to change their flights if at all possible but if this is not, the registrar has asked all depts/schools to treat such cases sympathetically and to make necessary arrangements for assessment for such students. Students concerned should discuss this with their host depts/schools or contact the International Education Office.

Belongings
Students can collect their belongings from Castlewhite/Victoria Lodge and University Hall all this week from 9am-6pm.

Residents from Upper Floors
It is expected that those living on the upper floors will be able to re-occupy their apartments on November 30th.

Residents on Ground Floor Apartments

All ground floor apartments will have to be completely gutted. Students will not be able to reoccupy these apartments until January.
Students affected will be rehoused in temporary accommodation. Disabled Students are a priority for rehousing.

PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION

Any students who need emergency accommodation tonight should call our helpline and give them your details.

We are currently seeking a meeting with the management of Victoria Mills and The Village to see what their response will be going forward.

Students in private houses that are affected are asked to contact their landlords or our helpline about temporary accommodation.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Mary Steele of the International Education Office is available on: 0214902172. There are arrangements currently being pursued to have a temporary office in the Registrar's Office for the International Education Office. This has not yet been confirmed.

UCC GENERAL CAMPUS UPDATE

A clean up and recovery operation commenced on Friday and continued over the weekend.
The following is the situation with respect to building availability:

Western Gateway Building:
This building is closed until further notice. Work is continuing to ensure an early re-opening of the building. Alternative accommodation will be made available to the departments affected. The alternative accommodation will likely be in space previously occupied by the relevant department. The Western Gateway car park will remain closed until further notice.

Western Road Houses: (Bloomfield Terrace / Brighton Villas / Lucan Place / Laurels / Roseleigh/Ferry Lodge)

The ground floor offices suffered serious damage. The floor coverings have been removed and cleaned. Staff can attend to recover materials. These buildings are available for re-occupation, however the ground floors will require further work – carpets etc. Staff are requested not to plug in or power up any electrical appliances on the ground floor until the appliances have been tested.

Connolly Building / Granary Theatre / Muskerry Villas / Dyke Parade

These buildings suffered severe damage to the ground floor (open access labs / teaching rooms / postgrad. rooms). The clean up operation is underway. Heating is not yet available and the building will remain closed until further notice. Alternative temporary accommodation will be offered to the departments affected.

North Mall (Enterprise Centre / Butler Building)

These buildings suffered severe damage to the ground floor (laboratories / lecture theatres / research areas / offices etc.) Carpets have been stripped out and the clean up is underway. The buildings are available for re-occupation however significant refurbishment work will be required to the ground floor. Staff are requested not to plug in or power up any electrical appliances on the ground floor until the appliances have been tested.

Mardyke Arena
Mardyke Arena will be closed until further notice.

Glucksman Gallery
UCC’s Lewis Glucksman Gallery has suffered extensive flood damage to its basement. The flooding poses a severe problem for the gallery, as the basement area housed the art stores, a major plant area and the kitchens.

The recovery operation began as soon as the gallery was alerted and initially focused on pumping water from the basement and ground floor to clear a safe passage to the art store. The recovery operation progressed over the weekend with a team of conservation experts working with the gallery staff to access and respond to the damage.

The art store housed a total of 184 artworks, the majority of which were from University College Cork’s Art Collection, with 11 artworks directly on loan from artists. The art in storage at the time of the flooding included works by significant artists such as Hughie O’Donoghue, Louis le Brocquy and Martin Gale.

The Glucksman Gallery is grateful for all the support it has received, in particular, from conservation experts and the UCC team which has allowed the gallery to respond to this unprecedented situation with maximum effect.

The main exhibition spaces were not affected but the gallery will remain closed until further notice.

Maltings Complex / Tyndall
This building will be open.

Campus Accommodation
Castlewhite, University Hall and Victoria Lodge will be closed until further notice. Staff will be available on site in each residence to facilitate students in recovering personal belongings. Some of the student accommodation will be available for re-occupation later in the week [notification will be sent out to students in due course].

Car Parking
Car parking in University Hall will not be available. The Western Gateway car park will remain closed until further notice. All other car parks will be available.

Water Supply
Currently mains water is available to all UCC buildings with the exception of the Maltings Complex where a local arrangement is in place. The City council has asked everybody to conserve water as much as possible.

Careers Service
is open for business

Hi, I was just wondering if you still had those pictures of flooding on Dyke Parade, I lived there since then and was wondering if the ground floor apartment/ basement was flooded back in 2009. Thanks
