Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have a 1TB Maxtor External Hard drive. I use for movie storage and photos. Recently my computer won't recognise it. It keeps coming up with a message ' Unable to recognise USB ' . I tried it in my work computer and it works fine. I tried plugging it in to another USB socket at home and it wont recognise it in any of them. There is only this External Hard Drive and my O2 Broadband Modem being used on my USB's. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi miseken

    What are your PC specs?

I had this type of problem before with Vista and a branded HP PC.

Let us know your specs including your power supply unit if you can.

It is possible that the usb sockets that you are plugging it into are not fully powered.
My uncle has an older PC and the USB sockets have enough power to recognise the fact that an external HD has been plugged in, but don't provide enough to actually spin up the disk.
I know its trying because it makes a very scary clicking sound.

If your HD has a socket for an external power source, try using a 5V dc adapter on it with that machine and see how it goes.

    +1

Or alternatively get a USB powered hub, or if you have one of those "2 usb connectors into 1" cables which feed the power of 2 usb sockets into one cable.

1Tb is a big drive to be powered solely by usb.

    Folks,
Thanks for all the help, it is working again now, I was advised to power down the P.C. and then disconnect power from P.C. and restart it. This has worked perfectly.

I have a 500 Gb Lacie drive and it gives similar problems every now and again. It has it's own power supply and 99 times out of 100, when I connect the USB cable to the PC, all is fine. The other time, I connect it and the PC recognises that something's there, but thinks that it's different hardware. No idea why this happens. The solution is to unplug the drive completely and reseat the cables.
