Cheese and onion crisps with a slice of cheddar if you have it. Never tried with ham and didn't particularly like it with easysingles.

Take two slice of bread, toast them, apply peanut butter(preferably chunky) to one, then 3/4 rashers, slightly crispy, either Galberts or Oldhaussen, on top of that, then some jalapenos on top of them, then the last slice of toast.
Best with a nice big mug of coffee.
    Absolute heaven!

Two slices of hot, buttered toast, with red cheddar cheese.

Slap the whole lot together in a hurry so the cheese starts to melt.

    Nyommmmmmmm.

Two simple tips that I'm surprised haven't been mentioned.

As you're eating the sandwich, flip it over every so often. You'll taste whichever side is on the bottom much more strongly, so if you flip it over it's like a new sandwich.

    For example, I have bread-mustard-roastbeef-ham-cheese-bread.

I'll start with the mustard/roastbeef side on my tongue and take a few bites. Mustard and roast beef with a hint of ham and cheese. Then I flip it over and suddenly it's a ham and cheese with some roast beef and a nice hint of mustard.

Also if you overstuff sandwiches, a well-placed toothpick can mean the difference between the perfect sandwich and catastrophy.

whats with deli counters buttering (or asking you for butter or mayo) and then 'margeing', (gak) your sandwich on one side only. wtf????

are they saving on 'butter' ? when they ask you and you say a small bit of butter they wollop it on in lumps

and btw, onion is a seasoning, not a 'veg'. i dont want a fist full of onion per sandwich, its feckin onion, a sprinkle is sufficient thankyou.......

    best sandwichs combo:

    rasher & marmalade on toast.
    or
    mashed banana on white
    or
    tuna/mayo/sweetcorn mix with chilli
    or the best toastie ever.....

ham cheese tomato onion + chopped olive, toasty and add a dollop of coleslaw into it after it comes outta the grill.....mmmmmm

I've a few favourites. They are:
    • Old School - What I had for lunch everyday as a kid. White bread, corned beef with Chef Brown Sauce. Even nicer in a baguette.
    • Banana Sambo - McCambridges Brown bread toasted and buttered with a banana topping served as an open sandwich.
    • Posh - Got this in an Italian restaurant in Kildare Village. Ciabatta with Rocket lettuce, parma ham and mozzarella. Delish.

    I think I just vomited a little.

Bananas are the vilest food known to man. Those ugly, smelly, horrible things have no place on a sandwich.

They have no place as a food let alone on a sandwich!

Gotta love the irish pride Big Toast bread - when its really fresh- butter and some good potato slices from your local nearest hot food counter...nyom....

    Yuck.

White, yeasty, spongey, nutrient free mulch.

A good quality bread is the cornerstone off any sandwhich.

    Munchies' sambos ftw.

always always butter both slices of bread with a thin even amount and never never let the wet fillings touch the bread.

My current sandwich obsession goes something like this.
    Crusty Batch bread
    mozzarella
    chicken
    relish
    onion
    Toasted

Also, just over a month until the christmas sandwich!

Jizzlord, whats in the christmas sambo??

the question is not what's in the sandwich, it's what is not in the sandwich
    Brussels sprouts.

ham, turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, etc and what ever the hell is about the kitchen end up in the christmas sandwich

I am about to make one of my faves - toasted multigrain bread with butter.. In between both slices goes Koka curry noodles and a load of mature grated cheese. Mmmmm - can't wait.:):):)

I have hyped this up big style for Cap'n D.. so let's hope he likes it too.:D

Nice fresh white bread is essential e.g. Johnston Mooney & O'Brien "Doorsteps" bread.

Sandwich toasters are crap, they squish all the fillings together and make the bread all hard and crackly! Also they're really difficult to clean properly. Therefore, I use the grill ... it might take a bit longer, but it's worth it.

So, put the bread under the grill to toast one side.

Make up some cajun mayo (not very difficult - just mix some cajun powder with some mayonnaise, quantities vary according to personal taste) - this must be done prior to putting it on the bread though. Do not take the lazy option and attempt to mix while on the bread to save on washing up!

Spread cajun mayo evenly on the untoasted sides of both slices of bread as per OP's advice, corner to corner.

On one slice, put a good thick layer of chicken (preferably leftovers from Sunday roast. But nice leftovers, not the icky dodgy looking bits.)

On the other side, a layer of very finely chopped white onions and green peppers.

Put a layer of cheese on top of each. The choice of cheese is very important; my personal current favourite is Coleraine Mild White Cheddar.

Grill it until the cheese is just starting to bubble.

Remove from grill, and place one leaf of fresh lettuce in the middle before putting the slices together.

Cut diagonally (of course!) Now here is a pet hate of mine. There is no need to lean down on the sandwich prior to cutting to squish it all together! I hate to see a nicely constructed sandwich destroyed like this!

Finally, serve with six Sour Cream and Onion Pringles and a cold can of Diet Coke.

    I'm hungry now ...

Nice, but most places the Ciabatta is too hard and it'd near crack your teeth.

Truth be told, my favoutie is to get a Bu Ali Nan Bread, Lamb Saag and combine the two. Best damb meat ball sambo ever :D

I eat shepherds pie in sandwich form. Have had a few odd looks for that.

My breakfast sandwiches are monsters. A standard enough breakfast sandwich would be about 4 sausages, 4 bacon, 2 waffles, 1 or 2 potato bread, some white pud, ketchup and maybe cheese.

Worst (best) I ever had was (IIRC) as follows:
    Breakfast muffin half, buttered
    burger cheese
    2x streaky bacon
    2x sausages
    potato waffle
    burger cheese
    beef burger
    2x sausages
    burger cheese
    2x streaky bacon
    potato waffle
other half of breakfast muffin, also buttered

There was some ketchup thrown in too. Monstrous start to a drinking session, greasy as hell, lovely :D

An absolute key part of the sandwich making process is the cut.

Always, always cut it diagonally. It doubles the taste.

Whenever I make spaghetti bolognese, I always leave some of the meat sauce over. Then later (or even better, next day), butter your bread, reheat the sauce & spoon over bread, lash on parmesan cheese, other bread on top and get stuck in. Also works with not fresh bread cos the heat and the sauce soften the bread up really well. Sooo gorgeously messy when the sauce is leaking down between your fingers om nom nom!

Leftover cold mashed potato with a sprinkling of grated cheese and/or a spoonful of beans makes a most substantial filling for a toasty but you really need to do it with one of those toasted sandwich makers so the potato is heated and the melted cheese/bean sauce gets trapped in the sandwich. Also, leave to cool cos otherwise it'll burn the bejeezus out of your tongue...

White sliced pan bread is the destroyer of all sandwiches! A good bit of wholemeal or your bog standard brown is essential.

A toasted turkey, mozeralla, mixed pepper and mayo sandwich..yummy! Im going veggie now though..so it'll have to be faux turkey from now on..

Ah yes, and then there was the time I was waiting to pay for my shopping and the guys in front of me were talking about the lasagne they'd bought the ingredients to make that night...

...and the lasagne sandwiches they were gonna have for lunch the next day...

There are as many perfect sandwiches as there are whims.
Sometimes: just 2 slices of doughy white bread and plastic ham, for the ultimate hangsangwidge.
Sometimes, BLT: very lightly toasted brown bread, decent spread of mayo while it's a little warm, crisp iceberg lettuce, 2 slices of smoked back rashers, four thick slices of tomato, salt, pepper, top slice of bread on, cut, and mmmmmmm
Other times, there is what is known in our house as "the magnificent sandwich": 2 slices wholemeal bread, mayo, iceberg lettuce, or mixed leaves, thickly sliced tomato 4 slices, slices of pickled gherkins, slices of cucumber, small sprinkling of grated cheese, some torn basil leaves, salt pepper, top slice of bread. All ingredients evenly distributed over the bread, not piled in the centre. Best with ready salted crisps and an enormomug o tea
Or sometimes, you can't beat a PB&J, peanut butter and jelly,(strawberry jam only) must be on doughy white bread.
Grilled fake-cheese sandwiches (butter on the outside) MUST be cut diagonally, they don't taste the same otherwise.

I do a version of the bolognese in a sandwich maker, don't have to heat the bolognese up then :) Add a bit of mozerella, and some chillis and/or piri piri sauce. Lovely.
Your mash/beans/cheese combo sounds good, will have to try it out soon!

Anyone else like it the Spanish way?

    Crusty roll, cut in half.
Cut a tomatoe in half, proceed to rub it all along one slice of the bread, getting it covered in the pulp of the tomato.
Press the two halves together then seperate.
Drizzle olive oil over the other slice.
Press the two halves together then seperate.
Works best with cheese and chorizo.
