2009 is in the bag! The biggest year in the League's history is over and it finished on a high note today in Dublin. Some fantastic fights, camaraderie, exultation, disappointment, controversy, excitement filled the three rings of the League today in equal parts, though it may seem somewhat self serving for me to say it, the League is the best way to start in MMA competition, to enjoy the hell out of it and not have to risk getting hurt while you do it. Once again I found myself wishing that the League existed when I started competing.

The League will be back in 2010, bigger and better than ever; We have a few ideas on how the Official Irish MMA League can get even stronger and provide better benefit to those taking part. More on that in the weeks to come.

The Finals system proved to be a good idea, though my implementation of it led to the latest start of any League yet, before I announce the League champions let me thank a few people who richly deserve it and without whom today just wouldn't have worked.

Colm for architecting this final round, and whose support is a constant blessing.
Tim for reffing an entire ring faster than I could ref mine!
Owen for jumping in to help ref barely having to be asked.
Dave Jones for help greasing the wheels at St. Andrews and with Gillian made setting up and running so easy for us today.
Richard Gorey for ushering for Tim and being at least partly responsible for that ring finishing so fast.
    Now without further ado -
    The Champions
Rookie 60kg: Stephen Walsh - Spartan MMA Northside
Rookie 65kg: Ivan Pencak - Spartan MMA Northside

Yeah I said to mark before I can only see the teen section getting bigger and bigger.

You go to a judo comp or kickboxing event and over half the competitors are junoirs.

As the sport grows the league is the place for them to start.

It was great to see them competing and pulling some nice moves, at the end of the day these will be the guys who will be representing our country in the future on the bigger stage hopefully.

Special mention goes out to the Hanson brothers... MMMMMhh Tap

Mushashi - I started two separate threads, not including this one, which detailed the method by which the champions of the League would be decided this year. The league tables are to be used to decide who will fight in the finals and in the final round we hold those finals.

You are correct that the two SBG fighters hold the highest points tally overall, they lost their finals at the Dublin round on Saturday, thereby allowing the named fighters in my initial post above to take the divisions.

I hope this is now clear.

What's the point in having a league if the most consistent fighter is not the league winner at the end of the league. These guys pay money & turn up and fight at the various events round the country. This doesn't send out a very good signal to contestant of the league if the most consistent fighter can build up a points lead only to have it nullified at the last contest. All sounds a bit FIFA ish to me.

Finalists were only made such if they were within 6 points of the winner.

I discussed this with a number of competitors as I was aware this was a departure from the spirit of a league competition, David Reilly in particular, and before the event I had no major objections.

Do feel free to complain now if something didn't turn out the way you liked however.

I agree with the new format. Some guys might not be able to make all for rounds. Then a lesser fighter could take the league just cuz he got a couple extra draws. To be the best you gotta beat the best.:D

I think the way it is at the moment is fair enough.

It adds a bit more excitement

I can however see your point but surely it should be the best fighter that wins.

What about a person new to MMA who only joined in half way through the year or could not make it to all leagues for whatever reason (work/family).

I wouldn't get too overworked about the whole thing

I competed in Galway only. It doesnt say anything about being within 6 points of the winner on the official Irish MMA league site.

    http://mmaleagueco.web133.discountasp.net/Rules.aspx

But it does say on the very first line of the rules page.

"The event will consist of limited rules amateur MMA matches, where no head shots are allowed at all. Three points will be awarded for a win and one point for a draw, the competitor with the most points at the end of the season will be declared the winner."

I am not really sure what you are trying to gain by arguing about this to be honest. I freely admit that the site is out of date, I apologise. In my defence this forum has always been the go-to place for up to date info on what is happening with the league. So was that admission what you hoped for?

Do you want me to take the first place trophies off the guys who won them and the medals off the two second placed fighters you mentioned in the initial post, although they accepted them and didn't seem to have any issue with the way it all played out?

Do you want me to say that it would have been better to announce in January 2009 that this was how the League was going to play out? I would be happy to say that as well, because I wish I had the idea back then, but although I was toying with different ideas on how to make more of a big deal out of winning a division, the idea didn't germinate until late September early October. For the most part all people involved in the League were accepting of this change and saw it as a change for the better of those winning divisions.

Let me know what you want and I will see if I can accommodate you.

I was just looking at the results and both fighters had the same number of fights 8 the same number of wins 3 but the guy who was given the title had two losses and the other guy had one and they both had a win over each other.

Fair comment, and sometimes life is just like that. What happened at the finals is what happened and can't be changed, which returns me to my question of what you want?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

I've been to a lot of tournaments and I've yet to see a perfect one. If you want to appreciate how professionally and efficiently the MMA League is run you should go see a TKD tournament that goes on from 8am-11pm sometime :)

I also agree the teens group is going to get massive.

"Colm O'Leary Fianna vs. Michael Cunningham Point Blank Gym
Rookie 70kg Lightweight Michael Cunningham Groin shot TKO"

Surely this should have been a DQ win for Colm O'Leary and not a 'TKO' for Michael Cunningham since the shot that ended the fight was a straight kick to the groin?

I would go with the decision of whoever reffed the match, the ref also is in charge of adding the results.

I was in Mikes corner for this fight. He was hurting his opponent with strikes and after a few shots his opponent went down. I couldn't see if it was a groin shot or not, but the ref (Colm O Reilly) said it was so the guy was given time to recover, he let the next two fights go ahead and then called the guys back in to fight again. Colm decided he didn't want to fight again so Mike got the win.

Ah that makes more sense. The result just looked quite strange. It's rare to see something like 'Griffin defeats Ortiz, Submission, Bullet Wound'

Thanks for the thanks, I apologise I didn't record the win details. I didn't realise it was necessary until Tim pointed it out to me.
